Ray asked.
âNot in the least. Make him be responsible, drive him to do whatâs expected of him. We ask only two things,â Albert said.
âAnd they are?â
âPlease donât put him in positions that could expose him to physical danger beyond the normal expectations of this trip,â Nigel said.
âAnd the second thing?â
âNo matter how tempting it may be, refrain from clocking him,â Albert said.
âClocking him?â
âI think it means like throttling him,â I said. âYou know, smacking him.â
âRegardless of how obnoxious he becomes.â
âIâve never hit one of my customers,â Ray said.
âRay â¦,â I prompted, trying to remind him of some thing that happened a couple of seasons ago.
âOkay. Iâve only ever hit one of my customers, and he took the first swing, and he was bigger than I was, and believe me, he really, really deserved it.â
âHow are we supposed to treat Victoria?â I asked.
âI suspect that will not be an issue,â Albert said. âYou have probably already discovered that she is a very different type of person.â
âVery different,â I said.
âShe is almost always hard-working, conscientious, polite and will do more than expected.â
âIâll vouch for that,â I said. âWe had a really good talk last night.â
Albert gave me a questioning look.
âAfter you two went to sleep,â Ray explained. âThey must have sat by the fire for more than an hour, just the two of them.â
âI was not aware of that,â Nigel said.
âYou two were sleeping pretty good, judging by the snoring coming from your tent,â I said.
âItâs nice the kids get along,â Ray said.
âYes ⦠nice ⦠very nice,â Nigel said, although the look on his face and his tone of voice didnât match the words.
âWe appreciate that you have befriended the Princess,â Albert said. âBut it is extremely important that you understand the parameters of the relationship.â
âI donât even understand that sentence,â I said.
âThat makes two of us,â Ray agreed.
Albert and Nigel exchanged a look.
âLet me try to explain this,â Albert said. âYou must be aware that your interaction with any member of the Royal Family is governed by very specific protocols andââ
âYouâre losing me again,â Ray said. âDo you understand what he means?â
âNo idea,â I agreed.
Albert looked as though he was struggling to come up with the right words. âThere are constraints ⦠limitations ⦠restrictions ⦠actions that are prohibited.â
âOh, I understand,â Ray said.
âExcellent!â
âYou donât want us to clock her, either.â
âOf course I donât, but that is not what I am referring to in this instance!â Albert was beginning to sound frustrated.
âThen maybe youâd better just spit it out in good plain Canadian English,â Ray snapped.
Once again Albert and Nigel exchanged a long look.
âLet me handle it,â Nigel said. He turned to me. âYou cannot kiss the Princess.â
âWhy canât he?â Ray demanded.
âI havenât ⦠I wonât ⦠I donât want to!â I sputtered.
âWhy donât you?â Ray asked. âSheâs a pretty little thing, and you two are the same age and all.â
âRegardless,â Albert said, âit would not be appropriate.â
âI wonât! Honestly!â
âThank you so much. We appreciate your co-operation in this most delicate matter,â Nigel said.
âCan I ask a question?â Ray said.
âCertainly,â Albert replied.
âIf she kisses him, is he allowed to kiss her back?â
âShe would not do that,â Albert said.
âWhy
