    He cuts me off with a smoldering kiss that rips my breath out of my chest, then he releases me completely. “Don’t lie to us, though.”
    “I…” I trail off, then look down. I’m so tired of running, and it’s true that any one of these men could protect me. Physically, obviously, but they’ve also got resources. Connections that I don’t have. This is a gamble, but it’s probably the best chance I’ll get. “I’ll take the test,” I say to Romeo.
    He nods, but I can tell it was never in dispute for him.
    Walking back to collect my clothes is awkward as hell. Every centimeter of my naked skin feels on display, and of course all three of the men walk behind me. I wonder if they’re staring at my ass, at the welts across it, at the come and juice drying on the insides of my thighs.
    After I dress, Hawthorne and Slade start talking about business, and Romeo accompanies me to the chauffeured car, then home. I wave goodbye casually from the lobby, but inside I’m a churning mass of emotions I can’t explain.
    For the first time, I want something more than just to stay alive. I want to be seen by someone else.
    It seems I’m moving up Maslow’s hierarchy of needs after all.
