back.
She had been waiting for a minute, watching Theo attempt to drink his coffee without getting his nose covered in froth, when she saw Chase and Dante Lampton walking over to where she was hiding. Chase had an arm around Danteâs shoulders. For a moment she was worried that they were going to sit on her, but they remained standing.
â⦠but thatâs not fair,â Dante was saying. He seemed upset.
âYou gotta toughen up if you want to make it in thisindustry,â replied his father.
âBut I worked so hard on this role. I really feel like I got a hook on this character.â
âI know,â said Chase, who didnât look like he was enjoying the conversation any more than Dante was. âYouâve done some great work on it but Callum was always only a small part. The filmâs about Petal.â
âBut youâre talking about cutting half of my scenes,â said Dante.
âKeep your voice down,â hissed Chase. âListen,â he said quietly, âIâm doing this for your own good.â
âHow can it be for my own good to cut my part out of the film?â
âSon, Iâm only going to say this once and I donât want you to repeat it but the fact is â¦â He lowered his voice even more. âThe fact is ⦠this is a lousy film.â
Dante stared in disbelief at what he was being told.
âI hoped it would be OK,â Chase continued, âa kind of fun film about celebrity culture. But itâs not. Itâs dross. Itâs garbage. Iâve been watching the rushes and thereâs no saving it. Every time I try to make it better, that girl comes along with some stupid idea to make it worse.â
âBut youâre the director,â said Dante.
âAnd her mumâs the exec producer. I have to go along with it.â
âIsnât there anything that can be done?â asked Dante.
âYes, I can save you,â said his father. âThe fact is that this is going to be the worst film of my career. Iâll probably never direct again. Itâs going to stink so bad that anyone associated with it is going to carry the stench, me included. I donât want your career being damaged. Thatâs why Iâm cutting your role. OK?â
Dante took all this in then said, âThanks, Dad. I love you.â He hugged his father.
âI love you too, son,â said Chase.
âHow sweet,â said Petal Moses, whose driver brought her buggy alongside them.
âHold on, Mum,â she said into the mobile phone she was holding to her ear. âChase is here now. Hi, Chase. Mum says that it doesnât matter if I mime in time with the music because youâll be able to sort it out in the edit.â
âThatâs actually not so easy, Petal,â said Chase patiently.
âHe says itâs not that easy,â she said into the phone.âYes, Iâll tell him.â She looked at him again. âMum says it
is
that easy and donât be so lazy, Chase, darling.â
Chase smiled. âSure thing, Petal. Itâs not a problem,â he said.
Chapter 14
Dirk Dilly wasnât easily impressed. But standing on the Y of the Hollywood sign set in the hills above Los Angeles, he couldnât help but admire the view. It was early evening. The city lights stretched on for miles, reminding Dirk of the opening sequence to
The Big Zero
.
âGet yourself off that thing,â said Kitelsky, poking his head around the side of the W.
âYeah, you get seen, weâre all in trouble,â said Putz, looking through a huge O.
Dirk had noticed that, as the two Desert Dragons got nearer the city, they had become increasingly nervous about being seen.
âRight, letâs get going,â said Dirk, jumping down.
âWhat? Now?â said Kitelsky.
âMaybe we should get a good nightâs sleep first,â said Putz.
âWhoeverâs stolen that film
