with no family. And Iâm far from grown up. But that doesnât mean my feelings arenât real. What I can do is watch out for her. And be her friend. Spend a little time with her. Is that too much to ask?â
âI get it,â Cole said. âI wonât tease you. I used to be terrified of people teasing me about Jenna.â
âThink about everything we need to do,â Jace said. âIf Mira catches on to how much I like her, it could really mess things up.â
âIâm pretty sure she suspects,â Cole said.
âSuspecting is okay,â Jace said. âI just canât make it clear. Do you think about Jenna a lot?â
âAll the time,â Cole said. âNot in romantic ways,â he rushed to clarify. âI worry about her. I think about my friend Dalton, too. And the other kids.â
âIâll help you find them,â Jace said.
âThanks.â
Jace handed Cole a key and indicated a door. âI left some food in there that I brought from the autocoach. Iâll go out and buy more later. You shouldnât go outside more than necessary.â
âGot it,â Cole said, wondering if he would have to spend the rest of his time in Elloweer indoors. âThanks for finding us a place to crash.â
Jace nodded and took off down the hall. Cole watched him go, suspecting he may have spoken to the real Jace for the first time. Cole sometimes doubted whether Jace even had feelings. They were usually hidden behind serious defenses.
Cole used the key to enter his room. Four narrow beds took up much of the space. At least everything was tidy. Twitch sat on the edge of one of the beds, antennae and wings visible. Gazing at his friend, something occurred to Cole. âYouâll be like that all the time now.â
Twitch gave a nervous smile. âYeah, outside the borders of Elloweer I looked like a regular human unless I used my ring. Iâve been gone long enough that itâs weird to think I can no longer camouflage myself that way. It sometimes made life easier. Outside of our few villages, the grinaldi arenât commonly seen. When I went abroad in Elloweer, I always stood out.â
Cole crossed the room and sat on a bed. âJace said you followed me after I ran into Ansel.â
Twitch stared at the floor. âI wanted to make sure you were all right.â
âThanks for having my back,â Cole said. âWatch out, though. You donât want to get mixed up with those slavers.â
âI believe you,â Twitch said. âWhat did he say to you? I couldnât get close enough to hear.â
âHe promised to hunt me down and chop off my hand with the freemark,â Cole said.
Twitch winced. âHe didnât seem like the sort of guy youâd want as an enemy.â
âNo,â Cole agreed.
âI bet youâre tired,â Twitch said.
âKind of,â Cole said. âI dozed off a little, and it helped. How about you?â
âIâm exhausted,â Twitch said. âBut being back in Elloweer is strange. I feel extra alert.â
âNice to be home?â Cole asked.
âThis isnât home,â Twitch said, blinking rapidly. âKasori is home. My village. The rest of Elloweer is mostly foreign to me. But being back here reminds me what I left behind.â
âYou left to help your village,â Cole recalled.
Twitch bowed his head, antennae quivering. âAnd I failed miserably.â
âWhat were you trying to do?â Cole asked.
Twitch gave a heavy sigh and shook his head. âItâs my burden, not yours.â
âIâll help if I can,â Cole said. âWe all will.â
Twitch looked up at him, tears shimmering in his eyes, his expression miserable. âYou know how you wouldnât want me getting mixed up with those slavers?â
Cole nodded.
âI wouldnât want you guys to get tangled up in my trouble.
