the Menagerie!â
Logan saw Zoe turn the color of chalk. He remembered the ancient-looking giant lizard from the Reptile Houseâthe one Zoe had to put to sleep before they could go in to feed the salamanders. He also remembered her saying something about how it was the most dangerous animal in the Menagerie.
âThe what?â Jasmin said.
Blue took the walkie-talkie from Zoeâs hand. âWhat about the pyrosalamanders? Are the pyrosalamanders contained?â
âYes, Blue, theyâre all in their cages, half-asleep as always,â Matthew said in an irritated voice. âCan you please try to wrap your mind around the fact that there is a basilisk on the loose somewhere?â
âOh, thank Neptune,â Blue said. He saw the look on Zoeâs face and added, âI mean, thatâs bad, too.â
âBasilisk?â Jasmin said. âHe didnât just say basilisk , did he?â
âWe have to find him,â Zoe said, sounding completely panicked. She took the walkie-talkie back. âDo you have any idea where he is?â
âThe hole is in the west wall, so he could have gone toward the dragons or the lake,â Matthew said. âOr . . .â
âInto the river that leads out of the Menagerie,â Zoe said. She started pacing up and down the living room.
âWait,â Jasmin said. âDragons?â
âOh no,â Zoe said, biting her nails. âOh no oh no oh no. Blue, did the merpeople ever fix the hole in the grate?â
Blue shrugged. âI have no idea.â
âKnowing mermaids, I think we can assume they didnât,â Zoe said.
âMERMAIDS?â Jasmin said.
âShould I call Mom and Dad?â Captain Fuzzbutt madean âoooooorghâ noise and sidled into her path so Zoe had to stop pacing and hug him. âMatthew, what do we do? Oh! The emergency kit!â She ran over to the big table and slid out a hidden drawer.
âIs it that terrible?â Logan asked. âCanât you use your rooster ringtones to just knock him out and drag him back?â
âYou have to be at fairly close range for the rooster crow to work, especially because our basilisk is four hundred and practically deaf,â Zoe said, pulling things out of the drawer and spreading them across the table. âIf any of us get close enough to use our cell phones, weâll be close enough for Basil to make eye contact or hiss at us, and then weâre dead.â
âI am so confused ,â Jasmin said.
âWe take care of mythical creatures here,â Blue said to her. âItâs top secret; no one can know.â
âWell, yeah, that makes sense,â Jasmin said. âLike, my dad would totally freak out if he knew there were dragons next door.â She stopped with a gasp and stared at Blue. âThat mapâthe one in Dadâs study!â
âLetâs deal with that crisis after we neutralize the killer lizard,â Zoe said. âMatthew! Are you still alive?â
âIâm inside the Reptile House,â Matthewâs voice came back. âIâm trying to figure out whether a brave Tracker would charge out there and search for it, or whether a smart Tracker would stay put in here.â
âI vote stay put,â Zoe said into the walkie-talkie.
âSays the twelve-year-old whoâs about to hunt it down armed with what, earplugs and a sleep mask?â Matthew said. âI know you, Zoe. Donât do something dumb.â
Zoe regarded the sleep mask in her hand thoughtfully.
âBasilisks are totally deadly,â Blue said to Jasmin.
âI know about basilisks,â she said, putting her hands on her hips. âI read fantasy, Blue.â
âYou stay here, put a blanket over your head, and wear these,â Zoe said, handing Jasmin a pair of earplugs.
Logan had a funny wave of emotions all at once: pride, that Zoe wasnât telling him to stay put,
