no scars, no marks; it was too flawless to be real. He was wearing a chocolate brown tuxedo and beige colored shirt with a matching tie. I could see his gold and stone studded cufflinks and a Rolex that imparted an effortless stylish appeal to his ensembles. He didn’t have to say anything. His attire was too perfect to narrate his story – strong, rich and fearless.
“You have been hand-picked from a lot of hundreds of employees. They said that you are one of the best in our company. Do you agree?” he looked at me with his ocean blue eyes that looked very different that day. They were lighter, more mild and magical.
“I am, sir,” I said after giving a quick thought. I didn’t want to sound narcissist, but couldn’t underestimate my skills as well.
“Don’t call me sir – just Nathan,” he said and I nodded in approval.
“You have to work with me 24 hours a day. You have been given a 100% hike on your salary, which means that you have been given a very important work of our company. It is highly confidential and no one can know a thing about it – not even your husband or boyfriend,” he said. “I don’t have any husband or boyfriend,” I interrupted him in between and regretted those words the moment they came out of my mouth. He was least interested to know about my personal life and ignored that statement completely.
“Since the work is very crucial and you have to work with me all the time, you have to directly report to me – no assistant or middle person in between. You have to sit adjacent to my office, so that I can call you whenever needed. You have to be on time – you can never get late. Your work has to be your top-most priority. I can call you in the middle of the night to assign new work. You can never crib, never say no, never do anything that is not told to you!” he kept of narrating all the things that I should do and should not do, while I couldn’t stop staring at his luscious lips that looked like red cherries. They were light and dark, both at the same time and were crafted to perfection.
“Do you understand Rebecca?” he asked me one more time.
“Yes, I do. I do. Thank you for the opportunity,” I said and came out of my reverie. A part of me was lost in Nathan.
“Okay, you may leave now. I will provide you all the information soon.” He said and I got up to leave the office. He didn’t look back and started working on his laptop again, in a very strange and mechanical manner. I looked back and gave him one last satisfying look. I wanted to capture that moment, that office, that essence in my brain. I didn’t want to let go. I didn’t want to leave the room, but I did - only to return soon.
I was allocated to sit just outside Nathan’s cabin and was given all the attention. Everyone in the office wanted to know about me and what my work was like. I didn’t let them know a thing, as the work was extremely confidential, but I was fascinated by the attention. It was the first time in my life when I was given that much attention, and I won’t lie, I didn’t know how to react.
We were working on some strange source of energy and its extraction. I had to work closely with the research time, getting them approvals and making their work seamless. The energy source was considered so divine and mysterious that it was out of this world. I was happy with the work, but it would get too overwhelming sometime. I was working harder than before and was expecting some kind of appreciating from Nathan, who was cold as ice.
Every morning he would assign me different work, expecting me to get back to him as soon as I could. When the world would be done, he won’t acknowledge or appreciate my efforts. He won’t even say a “Thank you!”
He would just nod, which was his polite way of saying that I could leave.
It was just like any other day when Nathan called me up. I just got back home from a hectic day at work and it was already past nine. I answered the call
