like a tour of the museum? Be happy to oblige.â
Octavia felt a stab of remorse. Sheâd love that. Sheâd always enjoyed the museum, coming here with her parents. And a behind the curtain tour would have been something special. But they didnât have time. âUnfortunately not,â she said. âWe have an appointment to keep. We canât put it off any longer.â
âMuch as weâd like to,â muttered Tweed.
âWell,â said Bainbridge. âAnother time, perhaps. And Iâll see you this afternoon.â
Octavia smiled, then she and Tweed turned and left the office.
Time to face the music.
âWhat part of âkeep out of troubleâ didnât you understand?â shouted Chase.
They were back in the library at Ravenstone Lodge. Chase was pacing back and forth while Temple sat in a wing backed chair by the window, his hands steepled together.
âJust let them explain, Barrington,â Temple said mildly.
âI wish they would!â
âIf youâd shut up for two seconds we might get a chance!â snapped Tweed. âBecause although you seem to think we all love the sound of your voice just as much as you do, Iâm afraid we donât. Itâs quite grating. Nasal.â
Octavia sighed. Temple smiled at her and rolled his eyes.
âExplain to me,â said Chase. âMake me understand. Why were you following this Benedict Wilberforce?â
âBecause he is involved in Octaviaâs motherâs disappearance.â
Chase looked at Octavia, a puzzled frown on his face. âWhen did your mother disappear?â
âOver a year ago,â said Temple disapprovingly. âYou should know this. Itâs in their files.â
Chase waved him away. âAnd how do you know this Wilberforce is involved?â
âHis name was listed as the person responsible for moving my mother from the Ministry prison.â
âWhy was she being kept there?â said Chase in astonishment.
âWe think itâs because she was investigating Lucien and the Tsar of Russia.â
âSo why did this Wilberforce take her out of the prison?â
âWe donât know,â said Octavia.
âIs he Ministry?â
âWe donât think so. At least, weâve not been able to find any record of him. He vanished after my mother was moved. I sent his name around the docks and left instructions that I was to be notified if he tried to enter the country again. Last night he did.â She shrugged. âWe followed him to the factory below the museum and witnessed him confronting another fellowâa person named Sekhem.â
Temple put his tea down with a heavy clink. âSekhem, you say?â
Octavia nodded.
âCan you describe him?â asked Temple urgently.
Octavia was rather surprised at his intensity. Temple was usually a very laid-back person. âOf course,â she said. âWe got a good look at him.â
âGood.â Temple exchanged a knowing look with Chase. âWeâll get you to work with a sketch artist. We can get his face out to all the ports.â
Octavia frowned. âAll the ports? Thatâs a bit much, isnât it? He hasnât done anything to warrant that kind of attention.â
Temple stood up. âThat factoryââ
âTemple,â said Chase. âThey donât need to know.â
âNo, but they deserve to know. Theyâre involved, however you may wish otherwise.â Temple turned to Tweed and Nightingale. âThat factory was Nikola Teslaâs laboratory.â
âNikola Tesla?â Octavia looked at Tweed in amazement.
âHas he been kidnapped?â asked Tweed. âIs that why the Ministry is going so mental?â
âI wish he had been.â Temple sighed. âTesla was shot and killed there last night.â
âNikola Tesla?â said Tweed.
âYes.â
âHeâs
