they were worried is all and seeing you now, I can understand why. I’m saying this as a friend but you look awful. You look like you just rolled out of bed and came straight to work. You’re always so put together.”
Alex groaned. “I know. I’m sure I look a mess. I didn’t sleep at all last night.”
“Is that why you were asleep in the break room instead of meeting me in the cafeteria.”
“I’m sorry I missed our standing lunch date Georgia. If I didn’t have that little nap, I wouldn’t have been able to get through the rest of the day.”
“It’s okay. If you needed the rest then I completely understand. But it’s not just your appearance. I noticed how spacey you’ve been and I had to go behind you to make sure you didn’t have a mishap like yesterday. I don’t want our supervisor breathing down your neck. ”
“Thanks for having my back, hon. I appreciate. I guess I just had a lot on my mind.”
“Does it have anything to do with that letter you received?”
That was the last subject Alex wanted to discuss. “I’m so sorry to have worried you. I promise I’ll be more diligent tomorrow. As soon as I go home, I’m going straight to bed so I’ll be well-rested in the morning .”
Georgia pursed her lips and folded her arms across her chest. “That doesn’t answer my question and you know it .”
    “What was the question again?”
“We both know you heard me loud and clear the first time.”
Alex groaned in frustration. “You’re going to make me tell you, aren’t you?”
“Well, considering I’ve covered your butt these past couple days, I think I’m owed some kind of explanation. That aside, we’re friends. I’m not asking to be nosy , I’m asking because I care about you. Please tell me what’s going on?”
Georgia could be quite persistent when she put her mind to something and she did have a point. The redhead had her back when no one else did. Alex doubted that she would have made it through these last eight years without her friend . “ I had some visitors last night.”
    “ Your letter writer?”
Alex nodded. “It was two of them , actually.”
Georgia raised a brow. “Really? Two of them? You know, I thought it was odd when you kept saying they and them instead of he or her but I didn’t really think about it. Who are they?”
“These two guys I used to know. We grew up together .”
    “Were you close?”
    “Very.”
    “So what happened?”
“Let’s just say that things got a little complicated. We haven’t spoken in years but after ignoring me for these past eight years, they decided it was time for me to go home to Bradfordville.”
    “What for?”
Alex shrugged. She was trying to figure out that part herself. Surely they could find some other plaything to toy with. Heaven knows there was never a shortage of women throwing themselves at them. “They say it’s because my grandmother wants to see me , but they implied they wanted me to come home for good .”
“Who are these people? Are they more relatives?”
    “No.”
“Is one of them an old boyfriend?”
“If I told you, you’d probably never look at me the same.”
“You’re my one of my closest friends. I wouldn’t judge you.”
Alex sighed seeing no point in keeping her past a secret any longer. “Like I said before, they used to be friends of mine. My grandmother worked as their housekeeper since before they were born and when I came along she would take me to work with her. They became my best friends. Eventually , it became more.”
Georgia narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean by, ‘became more’. She made air quotes.
    “Exactly how it sounds.”
“You mean you were romantically involved? With both of them.”
Alex nodded. “Yes, but it went horribly wrong. I thought what we had was special but apparently I was wrong. When my grandmother found out…let’s just say she didn’t take it well. Wow, so you ended up dating them both at one point?”
    “No, I
