bent the corner and vanished. He was met with a foul stench when he climbed out of his vehicle. The smell was a mixture of secondhand smoke, urine, and old leftovers. He withdrew his handkerchief and held it up to his face. Moments later, he stood in front of room 148. He drew his silencer-equipped 9 mm and placed his ear up against the door.
The muffled sound of the news on television could be heard playing on the other side of the motel room door. He listened a few seconds more before pulling out the electronic room key and inserting it. The light turned green. Joshua Black pushed down lightly on the door handle and gently opened the motel room door. He wasted no time waving his gun around the room. It only took a couple of seconds to realize he had nearly shot up an empty room. He entered the room and let the door close behind him.
The first thing he noticed was how spotless the room appeared. There was nothing in the room that indicated anybody had been in it. There was no trash, used towels or washcloths, or personal items anywhere in sight. It was easy for him to draw the conclusion that whoever occupied the room did not any longer. He walked over toward the bed, snatched the linen off, and flipped up the mattress, hoping for a clue or something to go off of. He came up empty. He released the mattress and let it fall back onto its box spring. Something appeared from under the bed as the mattress landed, causing him to look down. A sinister grin appeared across his face as he kneeled.
He rose up and made his way to the motel room door. His work was done there. The casino chip belonging to the families was all he needed to confirm that who he was looking for had in fact been there. He let himself out the way he had come in and made his way back to the front desk.
Frank McNitty’s eyes grew with excitement when he saw Joshua Black returning. “So, is it them?” he asked.
    â€œYes,” Joshua Black replied.
Frank McNitty couldn’t hold back his smile.
â€œBut they’re gone,” Joshua Black added.
Frank McNitty’s smile instantly turned into a frown. The familiar beet-red look returned from earlier. “Aww fuck!” he cursed. “So, what does that mean? I don’t get the reward?” The disappointment could be heard in his tone.
â€œI’m afraid it means your services are no longer needed,” Joshua Black clarified.
Frank McNitty never saw him draw his weapon from behind his back. By the time he saw the small hole of the silencer pointing in his direction, it was too late. The bullet penetrated his skull, sending him tumbling back. Joshua Black came around the corner and put one more shot in his head. He looked around until he located what he was looking for. Once he spotted the recorders, he wasted no time retrieving the video surveillance tapes. He then stuffed the four discs in his jacket pocket then calmly exited the motel lobby for a second time and pulled onto the main road.

Chapter Thirteen
Meanwhile, thirty-five minutes away from Richmond. . .
Butterflies danced in Baby’s stomach as she pulled onto the stone-filled driveway. She had no way of knowing what she had just evaded back at the motel.
â€œWe’re here.” She turned and looked at Treacherous. She nervously watched as Treacherous took in the scenery. She took a deep breath then exited the driver’s side of the vehicle. She made her way over to the passenger’s side. She made an attempt to help Treacherous out of the car. He waved her off.
    â€œI got it,” Treacherous announced.
â€œOkay.” She smiled proudly. She let him be and walked toward the door of where she had just pulled up to. “So, this is it.” She introduced their new place.
Baby had been running around for the past few days getting everything situated for the two of them. She wanted everything to be perfect. It meant everything to her that her lover approved of every move she made on
