was just adding it all up in her mind, and anyway she looked at it she had a big fat zero.

“Good to know, Bruce,” she said not knowing what to say to the knowledge that she’d possibly be sexually assaulted if she didn’t do what they said. “Well, I’d better be going if I’m going to make any progress. I don’t have much time left.”

“Alright then. You have the phone number when you have him in your sights. I’ll have the phone by my side all day.”

She hung up because she didn’t want to complete the niceties that would be appropriate for regular people. These monsters she was dealing with weren’t anything but bullies with a bit of cash and drugs. Hoping that she didn’t disturb Tyson with all her whispering and dirty deal talk, she walked back into the room silently only to find the man who filled her mind sitting on the edge of the bed.

“Who was that?” he asked when she sat down next to him.

“Just some business I recently got into.” That was the truth and she was pleased with herself for trying to keep some of the things she had promised to herself.

“Sounded intense. I couldn’t hear what you were saying but to my ears it sounded like something escalating. I hope you don’t get involved with any motorcycle clubs; they can drag you in to their shit faster than you can blink, and you’ll find yourself so entangled in their strings, it’ll feel like rope.

“Words to live by, and I know if anyone knows you do.”

Tyson nodded at her and stood up. “It’s time to get ready anyway.”

“Did you want to shower with me or by yourself? The first way would be more fun, but the second way would be more practical and would get us out of here on time.” The sly look on Tyson’s face was one she didn’t want to miss, but she couldn’t imagine that he’d be smiling if he knew she was planning on selling him out for money in her pocket or the fact that she had planned to do it in the first place. Would he think she came to his house and slept with him knowing what she had to do the whole time?

“This is a big day, and we both should be pretty sharp so I suggest you go first while I make a little breakfast, and then I’ll go after you.” She thought she sounded logical, but really she was a shaky, quivering mess on the inside.

He walked back and pulled her into his arms. “Whatever it is that’s bothering you, I hope it goes away. I don’t want to ask you more about it because it seemed like you just shut down when I asked, but if you need assistance let me know.”

Tyson sounded so sincere, she was almost in tears. She was turning into a basket case, and if her ability to look at this rationally was going to be tarnished, she was purely fucked. Admittedly the hug and forehead kiss was nice, but was it worth all the trouble it was going to make in her life? She wasn’t sure, and that was the real reason she needed him to take a shower by himself. Ella needed time to think, and she did that best alone.

    CHAPTER SEVEN

She looked too cute to be here around the desperate and needy people who looked at the horse track like it was the cure for all disease. Tyson wanted to bring her because of the way she seemed to be in his corner. He’d been thinking he enjoyed his life. He had no one to look after. He was free as a bird, and being with Ella for just this short while had made him see how good it was to have someone care about your plight. And she rode the back on his hog like a fucking champion.

“How’re you doing?” he asked her because she’d been jumpy since she got that call this morning. She didn’t seem like a woman who’d play a man, and the conversation didn’t sound like one she was having with an ex-lover, but it definitely sounded like an argument of some sort.

“I’m good. Why?” Ella was trying to be into this, but she was definitely preoccupied.

“Because ever since you got the
