beside her, their shoulders brushing together as he took a sip from
the peppermint stick when she sipped her own. “What do you think?”
“It’s yummy and reminds me of summer. Thank you for this.
I’ll have to brush my teeth again before we fall asleep, but I’ll have to run
up to the bathhouse too.”
    “That’s okay. We’ll go when you’re ready.”
Eve sucked on her peppermint stick. Every time she drew on
the stick, tightness in his groin followed, his cock thickened, lengthening.
Shifting to face her more directly, he studied her, finding
that he liked the way her hair fell all around her face and shoulders. She
tended to wear it all twisted up in a bun when she was working.
Reaching out, he stroked his fingers down a lock that had
fallen in her face, gently brushing it up behind her ear. She sighed a little,
it was cute.
“I like your hair down. Maybe you’ll consider wearing it
down more often?”
“Actually, wearing it this way is more comfortable unless
it’s wicked hot. When I’m teaching classes, students seem to take me more
seriously when it’s up.”
    “The male students, you mean?”
    “Yes.”
“Can’t say I blame them for finding you attractive,” he
said. “To keep them focused on lectures go back to the bun when class is in
session.”
“Did I hear that right? Getting protective already, boss?”
she questioned, raising her left brow as she drew on her peppermint stick.
“Yes. You mean a lot to me, Eve. If I’m prepared to keep
myself in check now that we’re together, I don’t want some jackass to hone in
on my territory.”
Eve blinked at him. “Ah, wow. Guess that means I’m really
dating Remington Sinclair after all.”
“You are,” he agreed. “Part of dating is getting to know
each other’s likes and dislikes. Is there anything I should know upfront? I
wouldn’t want to upset you.”
“Primarily, I’m afraid of needles and get very nervous when
it’s time to go to see a doctor or dentist.”
“May I ask why? I want to understand you, Eve.”
“While my mother was battling breast cancer, I visited her
in the hospital and hated seeing the tubes and the IVs in her arms. Chemo made
her sick and weak. She was in a great deal of pain and I was so scared for her.
To this day, I dread going to the doctor or dentist because of it.”
“The next time you have an appointment for either let me
come with you. You shouldn’t have to face your fears alone.”
“The idea of getting a tattoo also freaks me out. I don’t
mind them on other people. They’re not for me.”
“It’s the needle thing,” he replied, understanding her
fears. “Sugar, you won’t have to worry about tattoos. If they’re not your
thing, that’s fine.”
Sipping on his peppermint stick, he welcomed the taste of
sweet lemonade, using his free hand to lift up her hair. At the moment, she
wasn’t wearing earrings but he could see the tiny holes.
“When did you get your ears pierced?”
“On my tenth birthday,” she answered. “My mom and I spent
the whole day together, had ice cream, went shopping.”
    “She had cancer then?”
    “Yes, in its earliest stages.”
“You and your dad do a good thing with the cancer research
fund. I’m sure she would be proud.”
“My dad set up the fund and I spend a great deal of time
educating women and men about warning signs. Many think of breast cancer as a
female only issue.”
“You get checked too, don’t you?”
“Despite my fears about needles and tests, I know my health
is more important. I had a mammogram when I turned thirty. I visit my
gynecologist routinely and do self-examination. Last time I went to see Dr.
Martin, Avery went with me.”
“That’s good,” he praised. “Let me know how I can help going
forward, okay?”
“You can walk with me during the fundraiser my father
established next year, maybe recruit others to join in.”
    “I’d love to.”
