    Gabriel pursed his lips. “Yes,” he said after going over her assessment in his head. “That is an accurate summation of the circumstances.” He walked to the window through which he had first taken his leave and opened it. He turned back to her and held out his hand. “But my name still holds sway in this land. There are those who will help us, and who will fortify this abode. You will not be in any danger come the morning, but only if we leave.” He lifted his head and sniffed the cool breeze drifting in through the window. “Right now.”
    Chloe stared at him for a moment and she realized that her tiny sheltered life had been thoroughly and irrevocably shattered. No more happy nights watching TV with her fiance. No more silly gab sessions at the nail salon with her best friend.
