should have heard her when Antonio picked us up at the airport in the limo. Mark my words, sheâll have Dad investing in hybrids by the time we leave here.â
Sterling laughed and grabbed a few bags.
âThen sheâll definitely have her work cut out for her,â he said, climbing up the stairs behind his older brother.
âDonât underestimate her. Sheâs on this whole environmental kick now. Our entire house is under major construction to be more eco-friendly. Solar panels, wind turbinesâconsider yourself warned,â Jonas said, entering their usual guest room.
âConsider himself warned about what?â Toni asked. She placed little Denzel in bed.
âNothing,â Jonas lied, but he looked as though he had just got caught with his hand inside the cookie jar.
Toniâs eyes narrowed, but a smile curved thecorners of her lips. âHow many times have I told you youâre a horrible liar?â
âToo many times to count.â Jonas rolled his eyes as he slipped a loving arm around Toniâs waist.
âUh-huh.â She peppered his cheek with kisses. âSo what were you two talking about?â
âNothing much. We were just talking about Sterlingâsâ¦love life,â Jonas tried lying again.
This time Toni took the bait. âReally?â
Sterling frowned, wondering why his brother was so determined to hang him out to dry.
âAre you seeing someone?â Toni asked. Her eyes shone.
Sterling didnât like being put on the spot. âNoânot exactly,â he said. âYou know meâwork, work, work.â
Disappointment pinched Toniâs face. âWeâre going to have to do something about that. Youâre a great guy andâ¦â
âIâm sure you will make some lucky woman a great husband,â said Sterling and Jonas, finishing her sentence for her.
âThat really is a horrible thing to say to someone, honey,â Jonas said.
Toni crossed her arms and narrowed her gaze between the two brothers. âFine. Just forget I said anything.â
Sterling was happy to do just that when she pointed a finger at him. âBut youâre not getting any younger, and all the money in the world canât replace the love of a good woman. Itâs not the end of theworld to settle down and start a family. Isnât that right, honey?â Toni slid into Jonasâs arms.
âRight, baby.â
The smile that spread across Jonasâs face stirred Sterlingâs jealousy. âIâm getting out of here. You two are nauseating.â
âOh, Sterling, come back,â Toni called after him, but he was determined to make his escape while he still had the chance.
âBaby, let him go. Heâs a big boy. Heâll know when itâs time for him to settle down.â Jonas laughed. âItâll be right about the time he goes insane.â
Chapter 7
A lyssa couldnât believe how nervous she was to actually be meeting her fatherâs girlfriend. Not girlfriend but fiancée and future stepmother. The title was a hard one to get used to. Throughout her life, she couldnât remember a single time when her father showed any interest in a woman. If heâd ever dated after her motherâs death, he certainly kept it from her. But what if she didnât like this woman? What if she was some evil, wicked stepmother with two horrible daughters like in âCinderellaâ?
Alyssa perked up.
Did Estelle have children of her own? She had no clue and it hadnât occurred to her to ask her father. She suddenly felt uneasy with the idea of sharing herfatherâs affectionânot just with another woman but possibly with a whole other family. Even as the thought drifted across her mind, she realized that she was being selfish. Still, there was a part of her that couldnât help it. She had become so accustomed to being Daddyâs little girl that she didnât know
