was no way he wanted go vaulting off that cliff without her. “Fuck, you’re so tight,” he muttered, clenching his teeth as the sweat rolled down his forehead. He wanted this feeling to last forever, but he knew there was no way to prolong the ecstasy, so he let go. Gripping the headboard for support, he gave himself over to it. “Yesss.” It went on and on, his cock pulsing inside of her, hot bursts of his come filling her.
She clenched her muscles around him, grinning. “I love the way it feels without a condom.”
He dropped his head, finally spent. “You realize there’s no going back now, don’t you?” He wasn’t just talking about sex without a condom. He knew he couldn’t go back to the life he had before he met her. Different women every week…
She crooked her finger, beckoning to him.
He lowered himself down slowly, bracing his forearms on either side of her head. He kissed her, lingering over her lips. As much as he hated it, he knew it was time to say good-bye.

    Chapter Nine

It had been three months since Brooklyn made the move, the longest three months of Steve’s life, trying to forget her. The regular season had resumed, which meant he had a distraction, but nothing made it easier. He thought of her day and night.
Tonight, he was making the requisite appearance at a team fundraiser for a local children’s hospital on the arm of a woman Chase’s wife, Taylor, had suggested he meet. Everyone he went out with reminded him of Brook, which resulted in the longest dry spell of his life, three long months since he’d had sex.
He and Chase were lounging at the bar, drink in hand, when Chase asked, “Have you talked to her?”
    “Who?”
Chase rolled his eyes, chuckling. “We both know who I’m talking about. Man, you need to forget about her.”
Steve glared at his friend. “Let me ask you a question. If Taylor had moved clear across the country shortly after you two met, how would you have reacted?”
Chase laughed, shaking his head. “I wasn’t stupid enough to let that happen. I knew a good thing when I had it, Davis.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean? You think there’s something I could have done to stop her? This is her life, her career, we’re talking about. How the hell am I supposed to compete with that?”
“If you’re in love with this woman…”
Steve held his hand up, backing up. “Whoa, who said anything about being in love with her?”
“Man, you’re as a thick as a brick sometimes.” He gripped Steve’s shoulder. “You’ve been moping around ever since she left; you haven’t gone out with anyone else…”
    “I’ve dated.”
“Only when your agent told you that you’d look like a loser if you showed up at some event alone. Besides, you and I both know I’m not talking about dating. When was the last time you banged one of your little puck bunnies?”
Steve gripped his glass of scotch. He didn’t want to have this conversation, not even with Chase. “I’m not gonna lie. It’s been a while.”
“The last chick you had was Brooklyn, wasn’t it?” Chase shook his head, looking disgusted, when Steve failed to respond. “You can’t go on like this.”
“I know. I’ll get it together. It’s just gonna take some time.”
“Steve, you and me have been friends for a long time. I never thought I’d see the day you’d lose it over a woman. I hate to tell you this, but there’s no doubt in my mind that she’s the one. You have to find a way to get her back.”
Steve scowled. “How the hell am I supposed to do that, Chase? She has a job she loves; she’s helping people, making a difference. I can’t mess with that. Even if I could convince her to come back, she’d only end up resenting me for making her choose between me and her career. It’s a no win, man.”
“Did it ever occur to you that she’s missing you as much as you’re missing her?”
He wanted to believe that more than anything. “She
