was sweeping crystal shards nearby.
Nancy wished sheâd been more careful to make sure no one overheard their plans. Colleen seemed to have heard them talking, too, because she walked over to Nancy a moment later.
âI know Iâm not responsible for you the way I am for the other kids,â Colleen said, âbut are you sure staying hereâs a good idea? You could be dealing with a very dangerous person.â
âWeâll be fine,â Ned assured her. âThere are four of us. You know what they say about safety in numbers.â
Colleen looked skeptical. âBut what if somethinghappens to you? Youâre miles from the nearest police station.â
âThanks for worrying about us,â Nancy said, âbut weâve been through a lot together. Weâve gotten pretty good at taking care of ourselves.â
With a shrug Colleen said, âSuit yourselves.â Stepping away, she called out, âCome on, Teen Works people! Anyone whoâs not sweeping, letâs get back to the basement. We have to clean out the rest of the stuff by tomorrow night.â
As most of the teens followed Colleen out the ballroom door, Nancy turned to Andrew again.
âWould you mind if I borrowed Ned for the rest of the afternoon? Iâve got a little checking up I want to do,â she said. âWe can pick up some food for dinner and meet you back here tonight for our camp-out.â
âSure, if it will help you find whoeverâs doing all this stuff,â Andrew said. âSee you guys later.â
âWhere are we going?â Ned asked when they got to the lobby.
Nancy draped his leather jacket over his bad arm, then slipped on her down parka. âI thought this would be the perfect excuse to spend some time alone with you,â she said, grinning. âIf we have to spend your vacation chasing after suspects, at least we can do it together.â
âThereâs no one Iâd rather chase suspects with,â Ned said with a warm look that made Nancy tingle all over. âWhoâs first on our list?â
âI want to find out if the clay sample from the balcony matches the clay Julie works with,â Nancy said. âThen I want to go to Blasterâs house and see if I can figure out what heâs hiding.â
She and Ned got in the Mustang, and Nancy headed for the small road that curved around the lake and into the town of Moon Lake. As she approached A Show of Hands, Nancy saw that Julie and the middle-aged woman were just locking up the boutique.
âHmm,â Ned said as Julie got into an old gray car and pulled away from the curb. âI guess youâll have to wait to check out that clay sample.â
Nancy slowed down, keeping a discreet distance behind Julieâs car. âIâm going to follow her,â she decided.
After a short drive down curving, tree-lined roads, Nancy followed Julieâs car into a suburban neighborhood.
âThis is Melborne,â Ned said, reading a sign. âSheâs probably going home.â
A few minutes later Julie turned onto a quiet street and pulled up alongside a small but well-kept white house.
âNot too incriminating so far,â Ned said.
âNo,â Nancy agreed. She parked diagonally across the street and watched as Julie got out of her car and headed up the front walk. After Julie had closed the front door behind her, Nancy said, âIâm going to try to talk to her.â
Ned nodded. âIâd better stay here. Julie knowsIâm Andrewâs friend. If she sees me with you, she might not be too cooperative.â
âGood point,â Nancy said, opening her door. âIâll try not to be too long.â
After hurrying up the front walk, Nancy rang Julieâs doorbell and waited. Half a minute later Julie opened the door. She looked even more tired than the day before, and her brown curly hair looked messy and unkempt. Nancy wondered if
