donât want to mess up.â
âNo one does,â she said.
He turned to her. âPeople died because I wasnât paying enough attention.â How had that slipped out?
âIâm so sorry.â
âYeah, well, you canât fix the past.â
âNo, but you can let it go.â
âWish I could.â He sighed. âAnd now, well, Echo Mountain has historically been a quiet town, until recently.â
âUntil what, you came on board as chief? Donât even go there, big guy. We had our share of trouble long before you took over, like the guys stalking Scott, and the thugs after Nia because of her deadbeat brother. And now I find a dead body. Iâm sorry it was on your watch.â
âWait, youâre not blaming yourself for this,â Nate said.
âNo, but I feel responsible for putting the people I care about in danger.â
She glanced at him with a startled expression, like sheâd blurted out a secret she hadnât meant to share. Awkward tension filled the living room.
âDonât worry, your mom will be fine.â Nate recovered. âAiden will make sure of it.â
She nodded, but didnât speak.
I feel responsible for putting the people I care about in danger.
Her words hung in the air between them, and Nate considered their meaning. She couldnât possibly include him on that list.
He had to redirect his thinking before it totally distracted him from his goal: protecting Cassie and finding out why âShovel Manâ killed the woman in the cabin.
âTo be clear, you didnât take anything from the rental cabin?â he said.
âJust the dog,â she said, breaking eye contact and walking back to the sofa.
âWhat were you supposed to do when you got there?â
âCheck appliances, general condition of the cabin, bring in fresh toiletries and linen. But I didnât get very far because I heard Dasher scratching at the closet door.â She shook her head. âI wasnât even supposed to be there.â
âExplain, please.â
âMy friend Becca had originally been assigned the Whispering Pines cabin, but I offered to cover for her. She seemed stressed lately.â
âWhyâs that?â Instead of sitting beside her, he chose a chair across from the coffee table.
âI think sheâs having boyfriend trouble. Tony keeps promising to get a better job. He does part-time work for Echo Mountain Rentals and sheâs been supporting them by holding down two jobs.â
He pulled out his notebook. âI need Becca and Tonyâs last names.â
âWait, why? You think theyâre involved in this?â
He glanced up at her trusting and offended expression. âShe might have seen or heard something along the way,â he said. âI have to look into everything connected to the rental company. Detective Vaughn has already been in touch with your boss.â
âOh, okay.â
Cassie gave him Beccaâs last name and her phone number. âI donât know Tonyâs, sorry.â
He looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
âOh, right, Iâm not supposed to say âsorry.â Sorry.â She smiled.
He refocused on his notebook to avoid the effect her disconcerting smile was having on him.
âIâll call it in.â He pulled his phone off his belt.
He called Detective Vaughn and gave her the information about Becca and Tony.
âYou think theyâre tied to the deceased?â Vaughn said.
âI have no idea,â he said into the phone. âCassie said Becca has been stressed out. Itâs worth looking into.â
âIâm on it.â
âAnd let me know when the suspect is in lockup.â
âOf course.â
He ended the call and turned to Cassie. âWeâll figure this out.â
An explosion echoed through the windows. Cassie shrieked and Nate instinctively pulled her against his
