out together. Oh no! What
is
Eric going to say? I look across, heâs talking to a policewoman. He looks as if heâs saying quite a lot.
âYou were, or you werenât.â
âI was,â I say, as quietly as possible. I need to keep this upset thing going. I sniff, loudly, and the policeman digs in his pocket for a tissue.
âSo what time do you think you went out?â asks the policeman.
âAbout six?â Whatâs Eric going to say?
âAnd did you see Jacob?â
âI did.â Now why did I say that?
The policeman holds up his hand, and a policewoman appears, looking all concerned. Mr Bell follows â he looks even more concerned.
Thereâs a horrible silence in the classroom, and from deep in my pocket, I hear Jacob yowling like a cat. I put my hand over my stomach and pretend it was me. Heâs singing something. âRing a Ring oâ Rosesâ?
The policemen look at each other and frown.
Too loudly, I say, âMy phone.â No one looks as if they believe me, so I have to start talking to cover the noise. âEric was there too. We both saw Jacob â didnât we?â
The girls gasp.
The boys shuffle their feet and bang the chairs.
âYes,â says Eric, and stares at me.
âHe took your sweets â donât you remember?â
The henchmen giggle. The policeman looks round and they shut up, immediately.
âYes,â says Eric, still staring at me.
âThat doesnât sound like Jacob!â says Mr Bell.
The policemen look puzzled.
âIt does. Heâs a bully,â says Eric.
The girls gasp.
âNo heâs not â heâs a gifted and talented youth,â says Mr Bell.
âWhen was this?â asks the policewoman.
Jacobâs yowling again. I canât keep pretending itâs my stomach â heâs kicking and punching at the camera bag and my hand really hurts.
âJust as it got dark,â I say quickly and loudly. âWe were near the town hall, he tried to take Ericâs sweets, and then I came along and he . . .â
I canât say,
shrank
.
âYes?â asks the policewoman.
âVanished.â
âYes,â says Eric.
âWhere? Vanished?â asks Mr Bell.
âVanished,â I say.
âVanished,â says Eric.
Jacob starts singing, âLondonâs Burningâ.
âInto the dark,â I say.
âInto the dark,â says Eric.
âHmm,â says Mr Bell.
Chapter 24
They finally let us out at lunchtime. By then my stomach really is rumbling. Jacobâs bitten through the bag, and is yelling his head off. Heâs singing rude songs about Eric.
âDinner hall!â shouts Eric.
Luckily the hallâs so noisy no one could possibly hear Jacob, and we take as long as we can to get our packed lunches out of the store.
âWhew,â says Eric.
âDid you hear him?â
âI heard âTwinkle Twinkle Little Starâ when Mr Bell was on about strangers and aliens. You should have left him at home.â
âAnd have Grandma find him?â
Eric sighs. âWhat
are
you going to do with him? He canât live like that for ever.â
âHeâs the least of my worries.â
âIâll come and help you look for Jupiter.â
In the playground, we hide behind the bins and Eric gives Jacob a corner of his tofu sandwich.
Jacob bites into the sandwich and scowls. âYuk, Four Eyes, this is disgusting. Dâyou eat this muck every day?â
âItâs nutritious, and healthy. At least I wonât die of clogged arteries, and obesity.â
âWhat dâyou mean? Are you calling me obese?â
Eric looks across at me. âWell, yes,â he says. âTechnically, I think you probably are.â
Jacob squeezes in his gut. It doesnât really get any smaller. But I notice he seems less like a bed bug now, and more like a pile of overripe tomatoes.
