    Chapter 1
    CALLIE
As I pulled into the short driveway on my side of the duplex I rented, I immediately spotted Evan in the front yard , on his side of the duplex , conversing with his pack beta, Mark. Just at the sight of the hunky alpha, my insides warmed. Eva n was the epitome of what all my romance novels described for a man: tall, dark and handsome.
I’d always gotten the impression that he was a combination of Middle Eastern and Hispanic. His features had an exotic edge, a rare combination. His eyes were almond shaped pools of chocolate I wanted to roll around in. H is complexion was a dark olive- tan color that reminded me of slightly burnt caramel. His lips were full with a sexy pout to them; just looking at them, I knew he was a great kisser. Add in his constant five-o-clock shadow, his exquisite body and mysterious demeanor and it was no wonder women fell at his feet.
I wasn’t one of those women though. I was infinitely attracted to the hunk, but I knew my limits. I saw the women who stopped by the office with baked dishes and treats to try to woo the man. I was nowhere close to being in his league.
Nope. I was a plus size human female in the world of the supernatural were. Dr. Solomon and myself were the only humans in the entire werewolf community in the small town of Sanduske . I worked as the pack’s bookkeeper and the alpha’s secretary, though to humans he was the CEO of Brusco Enterprises, a worldwide manufacturing company , which made me his executive assistant .
Both men smiled and waved at me as I parked the car. I gave them a smile and waved back as I slid out of the vehicle as gracefully as possible in my skirt.
I was an overly curvaceous woman, but it didn’t mean I had to hide beneath oversized rags. When you’d been overweight your entire life, at some point you were bound to begin accepting your fate. That happened about three years ago for me when I graduated from college and dumped the most unsupportive, shallow boyfriend in the world. Ever since then, I’d dressed to accentuate, rather than hide my curves.
Today I wore a high-waist, black pencil skirt that skimmed my knees. I tucked in a black camisole with a sheer , long-sleeved navy button up shirt over top of that, again tucked into the skirt to show off my excess sexiness. That’s what I’d come to refer to it as. It wasn’t going anywhere. Lord knew I ’d tried to diet it away, but it never lasted. I always bounced right back to my twenty-something size. So, I embraced it. Maybe not all men liked full-figured women, but one day, I’d meet the man who did, and I was confident that it would be my attractive attire that first drew his eye to me.
My glossy black kitten heels clacked with power against the concrete as I ambled to the trunk. I was just reaching to grab my grocery bags with Evan’s voice rung out across the lawn.
    “Do you need any help?”
I turned around and shook my head negatively. “I’ve got it, thanks.”
His eyes seemed to turn molten as he stared at me, eliciting an involuntary shiver from me. Nothing was tense; no signs showed that he was being affected by me the same way I was being affected by him. It was my curse. I always fell for the guy who wanted nothing to do with a woman like me.
I swallowed hard, shaking myself mentally. I gave him a small, courteous smile and then focused on getting inside and away from my humiliation as quickly as possible.
