youâd think something bad about them for even a second,â Zac says. âI thought we were friends.â He storms off down the stairs and Iâm left shivering at his words. But I canât worry about my friendship with Zac right now. I have to tell Flynn. Thereâs no other choice. If I donât, Iâm pretty sure the endangered coral reef heâs so keen on protecting is in serious danger of being blown to Bangkok and back any minute. I rush out to the deck.
âFlynn? I mean, Dad?â Donât blow your cover now, Malone! I slow down and take a breath. Heâs sitting with Lexi.
Rats.
âMarina!â Flynn says, wrapping me in a big bear hug. âJust the girl I wanted to see. Itâs almost time for your dive. You ready?â
I sort of nod, because what else can I do?
âItâs time for you to step out on your own now, without me. But Iâll be right here waiting to hear all about it. Of course, your buddy Lexi here is going to be your dive partner for the shoot,â Flynn tells me. âYou know what that means⦠You two stick together no matter what.â Lexi just stands there and smiles like sheâs not wicked Queen Matilda from the Mini Mermaid movie, which she totally is.
âThatâs right, Mare. Itâll just be you and me down there,â Lexi says, pulling me from Flynnâs arms. âWeâre going be a great team.â What are we calling our team, Lexi? The Coral Dynamos? I try to fake a smile, but Iâm not good at that. The corners of my mouth donât want to turn up.
âI think I need to hit the restroom one last time,â I say, stalling. Well itâs not like I can say I need an emergency genie conference, is it?
âMake it quick,â Flynn says. I give him a thumbs-up and practically slide down the steep staircase. I lock myself in the bathroom.
âFffffffrank!â I whisper-yell into the metal plate that looks almost like a mirror since I am in full-on panic mode now. âKinda need you right now! Iâm about to be blown to bits! You can ignore me the next three times I call you, just not this time! Come in, Frank!â His face starts to come into focus but I canât really see or hear him all that well since this piece of metal isnât exactly a mirror.
âMaggie! Howâ¦doing?â he asks, squinting his eyes to see me. âIs this the best mirror you could find?â
âSorry! Just listen!â I say, because I really donât have much time. âItâs true! I definitely heard Captain Jack and Lexi talking about blowing up the reef! With dynamite. You know, boom, boom ? And Iâm pretty sure that little box Iâm supposed to carry down there today has the timer inside it!â
âOkay, Mags. Iâm only catching about every third word youâre saying. I definitely heard dynamite and boom, boom ,â Frank says, getting serious like Iâve never seen him. âSounds like youâre in over your head. Whatâs your plan?â
âPlan?â I ask, practically in tears. âI donât have a plan! Well, actually I do. Itâs to not get blown up today! Got any ideas?â
âMaggie Malone,â Frank says. âIf thereâs one thing I know about you, itâs that youâre a smart cookie. Youâll figure it out. Did you talk to Zac?â
âI tried,â I moan. âBut he got really mad. Iâm not sure heâs even speaking to me anymore.â
Frank looks like heâs thinking about this. âWhat about Flynn?â he asks hopefully.
âI canât get him alone!â I shout, jumping up and hitting my head on the ceiling of the tiny bathroom. âAnd I canât tell him in front of Lexi or Captain Jackââ
I can see Frankâs lips moving but I canât hear a word of it. Itâs like Iâm watching a MeTube video with the volume turned downâbut
