set?â
âI donât know. Fifteen bucks?â
âIf you could do ten people a week that would be a hundred fifty dollars. Thatâs more than youâd make at a fast-food restaurant.â
âProbably. Thatâs a good idea. Iâm going to get some flyers made. But wait. I donât even have cash to get any equipment. Iâve barely got enough money to eat off campus.â
âIâll buy you the supplies. You can pay me back next year, when you get that first financial aid refund check.â
Piperâs eyes light up, but then she looks suspicious. âWhy would you do that for me?â
âI guess because your situation really sucks and Iâm feeling grateful for my mom and my blessings right now. Donât look a gift horse in the mouth, heffa.â
Piper laughs out loud. âOkay, Iâm just going to say thank you.â
âAnd Iâm just going to say youâre welcome.â
âGuess who I saw at Busy Beeâs last night?â
I already know who she saw, because Gia filled me in late last night after they got in. Gia and Ricky were on a âdouble dateâ with Kevin and Piper. Well ... sort of. Kevin didnât realize he was going on a date until he got there, and apparently he wasnât happy. But they saw DeShawn from my video shoot.
âWho did you see, Piper?â
âGia mustâve already told you, but we saw DeShawn and he asked about you. He wanted to know if youâd broken up with your boyfriend yet.â
To be honest, DeShawn hadnât even come to mind since we shot my video. I was pleased that he asked about me, though. I mean, I am a girl, and he is ridiculously gorgeous.
âWhat did you tell him?â I ask.
âNothing. I didnât tell him anything. Not even when he gave us tickets to their game in Jacksonville, Alabama.â
âHe gave us tickets? Are yâall going? When is the game?â
âItâs this coming Saturday, and Gia is definitely going. You know she gotta see her little boo play ball and everything.â
âHow are yâall getting there?â I ask.
Piper grins which lets me know her answer before she speaks a word. âWe were hoping you would drive.â
I let out a big sigh. âWell, Iâve got a show on Friday night at The House of Blues. I probably wonât feel like driving. Who else has a license?â
âI bet Giaâs friend Kevin would drive. He seems really responsible.â
âYou like him.â
âI do, but Iâm not sure if Iâm his type.â
I think back on what Gia said about Kevin and wonder if Piperâs crush is a lost cause.
âYou think Meagan will want to come too?â I ask changing the subject from Kevin.
Piper scrunches up her nose. âI need a break from her. Plus, I think she likes Kevin too.â
I shake my head. âNope. Sheâs talking to another guy at Morehouse, I think. She hasnât said anything else about Kevin.â
âThen, I guess itâs okay. I just ... well ... sheâs always reminding me of how privileged she is and how underprivileged I am.â
âShe does that to all of us, Piper, not just you.â
âBut the difference between yâall and me, is that yâall really do have something. Youâre a freaking celebrity. Gia doesnât care about what anyone thinks on anything. I was really hoping that my first roommate would be like a sister to me, but Meagan and I arenât bonding at all.â
âLook at it this way. Itâs only a year, right? Next year, youâll get a new roomie. Maybe weâll all move off campus together.â
Why did I let those words fly out of my mouth? That was definitely a thought that shouldâve stayed internal. I donât think I know Piper well enough to live with her. Gia is a no-brainer. Sheâs absolutely gonna be my off-campus roomie, if I can convince her that living
