Golden Change
Kylie as she sat on the courtyard, her knee and elbow bleeding from the road rash. “I’m okay,” she tried to assure him. She tried to give him a smile but the effect was ruined by tears welling in her eyes as the pain caught up with her.
“Call Dr. Jones,” Aiden barked out to Jacob as he scooped her up, bringing her over to their chaise chair. The boys had all trailed behind, not knowing what to do but wanting to help in some way. “Ice! Somebody bring me some ice,” Aiden snarled.
Jacob and Randy ran to the kitchen and opened the freezer, filling a bag with crushed ice. Jacob ran back with the bag, handing it to Aiden.
Aiden tried without success to use the one bag on her left knee and right elbow at the same time. “I need more,” he barked. Randy went back into the house, filling another bag with crushed ice. Randy handed the bag of ice to Dylan, who was standing in the doorway. Dylan threw the back to Nico, who was standing next to Kylie. Unfortunately the bag hit the side of Nico’s head, bounced off and landed on Kylie’s lap. Kylie jumped in surprise. Nico backed away as Aiden turned his eyes towards him.
Jacob took a step between Nico and Aiden, telling him, “Dr. Jones is on her way. She should be here in a few minutes.” Jacob turned to Nico. “Wait for her at the door.”
Crisis somewhat adverted, Aiden stroked her hair from her face, trying not to touch her arm or knee as they waited.
It was a stressful five minutes as Kylie tried to assure Aiden she was fine, all the while Aiden continued to growl under his breath what sounded like threats to “inept boys,” “soon-to-be-dead boys,” “boys who are too clumsy to live.”
The boys continued to stand around in case something else could be done.
Dr. Amanda Jones arrived with a cool, calm confidence. She was a human woman, taller than Kylie, and beautifully Rubenesque. She had thick blonde hair, which was naturally curly. Today her hair was wrapped in a tight bun. Unlike Kylie or Zehavian women, she wore a doctor’s coat. Jacob was sure the boys had never seen a woman doctor, let alone an earthly woman doctor. She had been a doctor on earth, and although she didn’t treat Zehavian woman, she had a thriving business here treating earth women.
She cut through the boys littering her way. “Out of the way, boys,” she called.
They stood aside for her to get to Kylie but didn’t leave the area.
Amanda carefully removed the ice packs to get a look at her wounds. She sported a spectacular case of road rash. Amanda had told Kylie once she was amused by Aiden’s solicitousness towards her and thought it was refreshing, given how most Zehavians treated earthlings.
Kylie and Amanda had become friends as well as her being her doctor here. She had told Kylie she went through massage therapy school before medical school. She had only barely finished her residency when she had been brought here. She had never really opened up about how she had been brought here.
Amanda looked up at the assembled crowd. “She’ll be fine. Why don’t you clear out? I think game day is over,” she said, noting the basketball that was still under one of the boy’s arms.
“Hope you feel better soon, Kylie,” some of them called out and as they headed back inside and towards the front entrance. Jacob walked them to the door before heading back to the courtyard.

Chapter 8

It was about five months into Jacob’s internship when Kylie heard their front door open and a group of loudly talking boys entered their house. She and Aiden were watching a game in their media room. Aiden loved technology and had installed a screen that encompassed an entire wall, as well as a holo-vision. It showed the on-field action on a 4-D table. The size of the players on the table reminded her of a foosball table.
“Cool, the game is already on,” she heard Jacob say as he peeked in before heading toward the kitchen.
Kylie could hear the boys rummaging in the kitchen.
