âThis takes complete concentration and silence.â She was delicately piping lines on each cupcake âtil the frosting on top looked like lace. âHand me the candy pearls, Delaney,â she whispered. âCarefully!â
âDonât breathe,â Sadie instructed Kylie and Jenna. âThe artist is at work.â
Lexi frowned. âDid you see that sculptor working on that bust in the palazzo? He would not stand for any distractions.â
âLike I said,â Sadie whispered. âSheâs in the zone. Shhhâ¦â
âWhat can we do?â Jenna asked.
Delaney handed her a rolling pin. âRoll fondant. My hands are killing me.â
By 11:30 p.m., the tower was complete, all except for the giant cupcake on top.
âMy eyes are closing,â Lexi groaned. âI canât pipe one more drop line or Iâll drop.â
âWe could get up early tomorrow, say six a.m., before we have to get dressed for the wedding,â Kylie suggested.
Jenna nodded. âI think we take a break.â There were bits and pieces of gum paste stuck to her face, her hands, even her sneakers, and frosting, flour, and sugar coated her shirt and jeans. âA little more fondant, and I could be the giant cupcake on top.â
Jennaâs wake-up call rang at exactly 5 a.m.
âGood morning!â said a chipper voice from the reception desk. âThis is your five oâclock wake-up call.â
âUgh,â Jenna yawned. âCould ya not be so happy about it?â
âItâs a beautiful day!â the woman continued. âLots of bright sunshine and temperatures in the 90s.â
âDid you say 90s?â Jenna was suddenly wide awake.
âYes, weâre expecting a bit of a heat wave for Aprilâ103 degrees by noon.â
â Dios mÃo! â Jenna slammed the receiver down. âWe have a huge problema !â
She raced through the suite and into the other bedroom where the girls were fast asleep. âKylie, Sadie, Lexi, Delaneyâ despierta ! Wake up!â
Kylie rubbed her eyes. âWhatâs the matter?â
âItâs supposed to be over 100 degrees today! Our cupcakes are gonna be soup in that sun!â Jenna said, tugging off their comforters. âWe need a Plan B, fast!â
âWhy didnât you think about the cupcakes melting before?â Lexi complained.
âWho knew we were gonna have a heat wave?â Jenna cried.
âCalm down.â Kylie tried to be the voice of reason. âWe can keep the cupcake tower indoors until dessert, in the air-conditioned lobby. Maybe set up some fans to blow on it outside when we wheel it into the garden?â
âOkay, okay.â Jenna tried to steady her nerves. âMaybe that will work.â
Delaney raised her hand. âGuys. Just one question: Didnât we shut off all the power in the kitchen last night when we left?â
âYes,â Kylie said. âWe turned off all the power like we were supposed to.â
â Including the air conditioner! â Jenna screamed. âDouble dios mio!â The girls raced through the lobby, still in their pjâs, and unlocked the door to the kitchen.
âItâs like an oven in here,â Jenna said. âIt must be 100 degrees!â She flipped on the light, and there was the cupcake tower, looking wilted.
Lexi climbed the ladder and inspected each tier. âOh, no! All the icing is mush!â she said. âIt all melted.â She handed Jenna a cupcake with a sad little puddle of royal icing on top.
âLetâs not panic,â Kylie said.
Lexi nodded. âFondant is gum paste. It will hold up better than icing. We can put a layer of buttercream under it.â
âAnd we rolled out tons of it last night and put it in the fridge,â Delaney said.
Kylie held up her cell phone. âCheck this out. This is called the giant granadilla flower, and itâs
