face and Robbie would still want her singing lead,â Kyra said.
âClaire doesnât strike me as the face-spitting type,â Tig replied.
âMe neither. She really does seem sweet.â
âKyra, do me a favor. Keep this under your hat.â
âI wonât say a word!â
âI mean it this time,â Tig said. âJust because we havenât heard from Reganâs crew yet about the incident with Haley doesnât mean we wonât. In fact, it worries me more that itâs taking them so long to strike. Like theyâre cooking up something really big.â
âMaybe theyâre not going to do anything at all,â said Kyra. When Tig rolled her eyes, Kyra said, âI know. Wishful thinking.â
âRegan wonât let a challenge to the order go unpunished,â Tig said. âGirls like her donât get to the top and stay there by letting girls like us defy them. No, somethingâs coming. The best thing we can do right now is to be ready and make sure they donât have any new information to use against us. Got it?â
Kyra promised to be discreet.
Tig would work on wooing Claire. And on getting âPlushâ figured out.
And in the meantime, sheâd watch her back.
Chapter Nineteen
C laire joined Tig and the other girls at the lunch table the next day.
Tig had already instructed the other members of the band not to pounce. âGet to know her,â Tig had told them. âJust be cool.â
âSo tell us about yourself,â Tig said to Claire. âWhereâd you come from?â
âYeah, Mars or Jupiter?â Robbie said. Claire laughed quietly.
âThat did sound weird,â Tig said. âWhat I meant was, where did you live before you moved here?â
âEngland,â Claire said.
âThatâs so cool!â Olivia said.
âWe were kinda wondering about the accent,â Tig said. âItâs awesome.â
âThatâs one nice benefit of living in the States,â Claire said. âAmericans are easily charmed by any rubbish that comes out of my mouth, it seems.â She smiled.
âHave you ever been to Wimbledon?â Olivia asked.
âIâm afraid not.â
âI plan on playing there one day!â Olivia said.
âOh, wouldnât that be lovely?â Claire replied.
âLovely!â Olivia said with a big smile. âThat sounds so . . . British! You have such a cool accent! I bet you could talk your way out of anything around here!â
âHowâd you end up in Alabama, of all places, from England?â Will asked.
âMy dad accepted a position at the university. Heâs heading up one of the English departmentâs programs on Shakespeare.â
Kyra asked, âDo you miss England? Do you ever get to go back to visit?â
âOur plan is to go home about once a year,â Claire replied. âOver the holidays to visit family.â
âEngland and Alabama,â Tig said. âThatâs an interesting combination.â
âYeah,â Claire said. âShould make for an odd blending of accents. Dadâs already teasing me about picking up a Southern drawl. Iâm probably the only person in town who says mum in one breath and yâall in the next!â
Tig loved the idea of having a new friend who was British. It seemed so exotic.
âWhatâs your favorite part about England?â Kyra asked.
âDefinitely the shopping,â Claire said. âNot to say that the old beautiful castles and such arenât wonderful to visit, but really, some of the shops back home are to die for!â
As Claire and the other girls chatted about shopping in England, Tig felt someone staring at her. She looked up to see Haley, Regan, and Sofia watching from their table. When they saw Tig look at them, they looked away and began what looked to Tig like plotting. Tig told herself to ignore them . . . at least
