fingers closed around my shoulder and the heat seemed to melt my bones. I became hyper aware of his touch, and the fact I still held a bright pink vibrator. I almost forgot to breathe.
Pulling away from him, I dashed toward my nightstand and shoved the wand in the only drawer. My hands shook and my heart thudded so loudly it threatened to give me a headache.
“There’s a lot more to me than you know.” The words tumbled from my lips before I could stop them.
“Is that right?” White teeth flashed. He looked every inch the big bad wolf as he sauntered toward me. “Now we’ll be living together, I’ll work on discovering your secrets.”
His lips inched closer. Closer. Hot breath that smelled of cinnamon fanned my cheeks. His cologne—just a hint of scent that reminded me of the sea—teased my nostrils. My pussy flinched as his strong, wide palms slid up my arms and cupped my shoulders. He drew me nearer and my eyelids fluttered closed as his mouth softly brushed over mine.
“Kids,” my mother called, interrupting us at the worst time. “What do you want for dinner?”
Alex stepped back from me and I blinked rapidly as Mom appeared in the doorway. Why couldn’t she have waited five more minutes? Damn it!
“Ummm…ahhhh…pizza?” I shook my head, hoping to clear the last of this horned up daze from my mind.
“Fried chicken and potato salad,” Alex said.
He looked unfazed by our recent near kiss, and I hated him for it. Of course, he kissed at least a dozen girls a week, so why should I matter? He was just playing with me and I knew that.
David appeared beside Mom. “Flip a coin.” He grinned. “Heads or tails.”
“Heads,” I called out as he flipped a quarter into the air then caught it on the back of his hand.
“Heads it is. Looks like we’re having pizza.” David wrapped an arm around Mom’s waist and pulled her close.
I raised my arms above my head and cheered in victory. Then I gave Alex a playful punch in the arm to rub in his defeat.
“You win.” He faked annoyance. “This time.”
It was nice having dinner as a family. Mom and I had been setting a table for two since Granny Porter died. We all chatted and laughed as we ate pepperoni pizza with extra cheese. Throughout our meal, I’d catch Alex staring at me off and on. I couldn’t figure out why, other than the fact he’d discovered my secret pink friend upstairs. Had it really intrigued him that much? The few friends I had all bought sex toys. It wasn’t that uncommon these days. Big deal. Sure, I was a shy smart kid, but I had needs.
After we finished dinner, Alex and I headed into the great room to play some Call of Duty. We’d been alone together many times before during our tutoring sessions, but it felt different now. There was a tension I wasn’t used to. Not that I wasn’t always on edge around him, since I had a major crush on the guy, but he kept stealing glances at me while we played. He even let me win, when he usually kicked my ass.
What was up with him? Why was he acting so weird? There was no way he could be interested in me. Alex dated tall thin blondes. I was at least twenty pounds heavier than his type and my hair was carrot red. A fine dusting of freckles over my nose and cheeks made me look twelve years old. I hated it. I wanted to look all hot and sophisticated like those cheerleaders Alex fucked.
“You hear back from Heighton College yet?” he asked as he obliterated another enemy shooter.
    “Yeah, I got in.”
“Awesome.” His face lit up. “Me too.”
My finger slipped on the controller and an enemy combatant blew me to smithereens. “Shit,” I muttered, making him chuckle at my mishap. “I thought you applied at Selkirk?”
“Nah. Got a basketball scholarship to Heighton. They’ve got a sick team.”
    “Congrats,” I squeaked.
So now not only would we be living together, we’d also be going to the same college.
A thrill race through my heart and up my spine. Even if I
