continued to hurl insults at each other, but Daniel paid them little notice. Normally he would have found the exchange between his pals amusing, but today . . . well, Daniel just didnât find himself in an easily amused mood.
He lifted the crate out of the stanhope and set it on the back stoop.
âHeckfire, Danâl whatâs got you so down in the mouth?â Jarvis prodded.
Daniel raised up and brushed his hands together. âLinsey Gordon.â
The lanky lamplighter grinned. âWhat did she do, try drowning you again?â
âYou heard about that?â
âItâs all over Horseshoe.â
Wonderful . âDonât these people have anything better to talk about?â
âYou oughtta know better than that, Daniel,â Oren said. âA body canât go to the outhouse without everyone knowing about it.â
Daniel didnât argue that. He raised his forearm against the wall and leaned into it. âTell me something, fellas. You ever get the feeling someone is plotting your downfall?â
âSomeone like . . .â Oren made a rolling motion with his hand.
âA woman,â Daniel finished.
âYouâre askinâ us?â Jarvis exclaimed.
âWell, yes.â Who else would he ask? His father? Any time he brought up the subject ofwomen to his dad, he wound up listening to an hourâs worth of âTheyâre a trap, boy, and you donât got time for traps. . . .â Maybe Jarvis and Potter werenât experts on the gentler sex, but he had to get this off his chest, and they were better than no one.
âSee, itâs like this. Iâve run into her more times today than I have all year.â Daniel recounted each incident, ending with, â. . . then she shows up at Jenny Kimmelâs when Iâm examining that new batch of kids she got.â
Jarvis shuddered. âJesus, Danâl. Linsey Gordon, kids . . . youâve just planted the seeds for a yearâs worth of nightmares.â
Daniel knew the feeling. Hearing the two in the same sentence was enough to give any sane man a case of hives. âThe question is, why?â
âMaybe sheâs taken a shine to you.â Jarvis grinned and winked.
âDonât even joke about that.â The thought of Linsey setting her sights on him made a tremor of apprehension surge through his veins. âBut I am beginning to wonder if this is just coincidence and Iâm overreacting, or if sheâs got something up her sleeve and Iâve got a right to worry.â
âIf ya ask me, you got a right to worry. The safest thing you can do is stay as far away from that gal as you can.â
âIsnât that the truth,â Daniel muttered.
âHere pal, Iâve got just the cure for what ails ya.â Jarvis slyly afforded Daniel a peek at the flask tucked into his inside coat pocket. âCooter Hobartâs special blend.â
The cure? More like the kill. âNo, thanks. That stuffâll peel the hide off a steer.â
âDidnât hear no complaints the last time.â
Hell, thatâs because it had about blistered Danielâs gullet. Heâd hardly been able to swallow, much less complain, the day Jarvis had decided to help him drown his sorrows over losing his fellowship. âSome other time, Robert. Iâve got a shipment to unpack before my dad has an apoplectic fit.â
âSuit yourself.â The lean man shrugged. âWe still on for Saturday night? You can help me take Potter for everything heâs got.â
âShee-oot, Jarvis here is the one with pockets deeper than his pants.â
âWhy not?â Daniel said without much enthusiasm. âIf you fellas are so eager to throw away your money, you might as well throw it in my direction.â
âThrow it away, hell. Iâm the poker king.â
Oren snorted. âYouâre the poker something, but it
