Karla didnât like knowing her sisters were talking about her personal life to Anna. âThey went out of business a couple of months ago.â
âOh, thatâs too bad. I know Grace was hoping he could help her get a job.â
Grace had never said anything to her about talking to Jim. âGrace doesnât need Jim to help her. Sheâs got one of the best agents in Los Angeles. All she needs is a break.â
âI hope she can hold on long enough to see it happen. Living down there is so expensive.â
âSheâs doing okay.â Karla thought Grace had stopped dumping her problems on Anna, but wasnât surprised that she hadnât. Grace was a person who never let a thought go unspoken.
âIt was lucky that Jim was free to take over the shop for you.â
âYes, it was.â
âYou donât want to talk about Jim to me, do you?â
âNot really.â
âThatâs okay. Itâs none of my business anyway. It was just my clumsy way to let you know I was interested.â
Karla hesitated over saying anything more. She couldnât remember one time she and Anna had talked about Jim that they hadnât ended up in a fight. âWhen I decided to come, it was either close up the shop or ask Jim to run it for me. I wasnât about to turn the place over to a stranger, and my part-time people already give me as many hours as they can. It happened that Jim was between jobs and willing to take it on for the month. He may have a lot of faults, but heâs honest.â She thought about what sheâd said. To some, her grandmother especially, honesty included fidelity. âAt least heâs honest when it comes to something like this.â
âSeems to me he was the perfect choice, then.â
Karla was aware how much the approval had cost Anna. âIâm pleased you agree.â
âDo you think thereâs any chance the two of you will get back together?â
âNo.â As far as Karla was concerned, Anna had lost the right to ask about her and Jim when sheâd refused to attend their wedding.
âAre you sure? Thereâs no one else in your life right nowâat least not according to Heather. Couples getting back together after a divorce isnât unheard of.â
âYou made it very clear that you never liked Jim. Why would you want me to get back together with him?â
âI was wrong. I never should have tried to stop you from marrying him. All I accomplished was to drive a wedge between us, and Iâve been sorry ever since.â
âSo now you think you can change that by giving your approval for us to get back together? Itâs not going to happen. Jim and I have gone our separate ways, and you and I are exactly where we have always been.â She sounded cruel and didnât want to. âWe may not have the best relationship, but itâs foolish to waste time worrying about it now or trying to change things. At least we know where we stand with each other, Anna. Thatâs something, donât you think?â
âI didnât mean to push you. Itâs just that sometimes I donât know when to stop.â
âMe either. Maybe itâs something genetic.â It was the first time in Karlaâs memory sheâd acknowledged they could have something in common.
âIf so, it skipped your mother. We never arguedânot about anything. That doesnât mean she listened to everything I said, mind you.â Annaâs smile at the memory was one of sweetness and longing. âShe would just stand there with one of those innocent looks on her face, nodding her head as if she agreed with everything her father or I said, and then sheâd go on and do whatever sheâd had in mind to do in the first place.â
âDaddy used to say she had a smile that could charm a general out of his stars.â
âHow lovely.â
âHe was always saying
