become, and glanced around. “Sorry. Lost in thought. Where are the boys?”
“They went to change into their swimsuits. I was thinking of joining them. Interested in an after dinner swim?”
“Not really. But I’ll watch.” Kerry pushed back her chair and smiled. “Why don’t you get ready, and I’ll clear up the dinner dishes for you since you went to all the trouble of cooking for us.”
Grayson hung his head. “Ah. I suppose a woman likes a man who can cook.”
Her grin widened. “You didn’t let us starve. It’s the thought that counts.”
He chuckled. “I ordered in from one of my favorite restaurants. It appears I made a good meal choice. Not much left.”
“My guys do have healthy appetites. If you were expecting leftovers, you’re sure to be disappointed.” She waved him away. “Go on—I’ll tidy up and you can give me a reprieve.”
“Deal.” Grayson stood and gave her shoulder a squeeze before striding from the dining room. He paused in the doorway. “I think I’m getting the better end of the bargain. You have to clean up after them on a regular basis.”
“Said a man who doesn’t raise children,” she quipped. “Sometimes a mother’s solace can be found in a quiet kitchen. No one bothers you.”
“Duly noted. Should you move in—kitchen duties are yours.”
Her jaw dropped opened to retort, but before she could, he winked and jogged out of the room.
Grinning like a fool, Kerry shook her head, and began clearing the dirty dishes from the table. As she stacked the soiled plates in the dishwasher and put containers of food in the fridge, she took a moment to take in the stainless steel appliances and oak cabinetry. An island in the centre of the kitchen was perfect for food preparation and large enough to eat around as indicated by a couple of bar stools. What would it be like to cook in this kitchen on a regular basis?
Wetting a dish rag at the sink, she squeezed out the excess water, and released a sigh.
Excited laughter and shouts echoed to her while she wiped down the dining room table and counter surfaces in the kitchen. Done with clean up, she hung the dirty cloth on the hook by the sink, and headed out the door off the kitchen that led to outside.
Closing the door behind her, she stepped onto the stone patio, taking in the sight before her. Grayson and her sons dove and splashed around each other like crazy. A stranger might mistake them for a family unit. Even Duncan appeared to genuinely enjoy himself, and he hadn’t been keen on coming in the first place.
Kerry plopped down onto one of the deck chairs, her heart beating a happy rhythm in her chest, delighted her sons were having fun in such a carefree way. Her mind couldn’t help but wonder if they could indeed get used to this. What child didn’t deserve to grow up in better circumstances? All she had to do was say ‘yes’ to moving in with Grayson in exchange for friendship. She’d be able to save money, they could live here, and it would give her a chance to provide a better education, and thus a future, to her kids.
A familiar string plucked at her heart, and she nibbled her lower lip in worry. Observing Grayson interact with her sons was the ultimate aphrodisiac. Friendship wouldn’t be difficult with him. He’d proven to have a sharp mind, he was easy on the eyes, and he’d won the boys over. So far. They’d both admitted to being tired of conventional dating. The leap from friendship to lovers could come in time.
Whoa. Slow down here. A decision like this can’t be rushed.
Grayson caught her eye and flashed a smile. The heat pooled in her belly, streaking lower to the juncture between her thighs, proving the leap to lovers would be a short jump indeed.
Damn it. She struggled to remember the last time she’d had sex. Her battery operated boyfriends had replaced most of her sex life. She had a frequent buyer’s card at the adult toy store, for God’s sake.
Grayson jumped up to catch a
