remarkable.â He shakes his head. âIt seems that the public thinks that Marty Smart is trustworthy, funny, and handsome. Old ladies especially love him. They think heâ s cute. â
âHmmm ⦠yes,â Gwendolyn agrees. âIt seems they do.â
âSo, Andy tells me that sheâs hired a new production assistant.â
âYes, Marty Smartâs daughter, in fact.â
âReally? How wonderful.â
âYes, she should be here by now. Would you like to meet her?â
What! Oh my gosh! Iâve been hiding behind the desk trying to do something with this mass of tangles, except Iâve just been making it worse.
âRodrigo, do something!â I whisper loudly. âI canât let her see me like this, especially in front of that important-looking dude.â
âThat dude owns the station,â Rodrigo whispers back.
âWhat!â
âHannah Smart! What are you doing behind that desk?â Gwendolyn barks. Her lips are pursed, her arms are crossed, and she is tapping her foot, obviously extremely annoyed. âHannah, please answer me. And what did you do to your hair?â
â Um â¦â
âWindy out there today, isnât it?â Owner-dude says to Gwendolyn. âLooks like Hannah got a little wind-blown on her way to work, thatâs all.â
I look up at Gwendolyn who is still frowning fiercely.
âSo, how do you like working at the station, Hannah?â Phillip asks.
âOh my gosh, I love it!â I reply as I quickly stand up from my crouching position behind the desk.
âWhat is it that you love about it?â
âWell ⦠hmmm â¦â I scratch my head. âI guess I just love all the smiles.â
âThe smiles?â Phillip looks over at Gwendolyn whose frown suddenly shifts into an uncomfortable grin.
âYeah. Iâm pretty lucky,â I say. âI get to do all those little jobs that no one else wants to do or that they just donât have time to do. I guess I kind of make peopleâs problems go away and that makes them happy and that ⦠makes them smile.â
Phillip nods. âI see your point.â
âYes, Hannah is quite helpful,â Gwendolyn says, her thin smile quivering as she stares at my hair.
âGwen, why donât you send Hannah over to hair and makeup. Let them work their magic. I bet theyâll have her looking spiffy in no time.â
âWonderful idea, Phillip!â Gwendolyn says, batting her eyelashes. âHannah, please find your way to make up and then report to Andy as soon as you have yourself ⦠put back together.â
âOf course,â I say with a quick nod as I take off down the hall toward hair and makeup.
âHannah, I need you, STAT !â Andy yells as I scurry past her office.
âIâm on a mission, Andy; can it wait?â I yell from the hall.
âNo, Hannah, it canât wait. This is panic stations!â
A quick U-turn in the hallway and I am in Andyâs office. âOkay, what do you need?â
âOh my gawd, Hannah! What happened to your hair?â
âWell, I was late leaving school and I got outside and â¦â
âNever mind; it doesnât matter. I need you to pick up cough drops. Mary-Lou has the NATT .â
âOh my gosh! Whatâs the NATT ? It sounds awful!â
âItâs the worst! Itâs the news-anchor -throat-tickle.â
â News-anchor - throat-tickle ?â I giggle.
âThis is serious, Hannah. She canât go on air like this. A tickle can lead to a cough and a cough can lead to a fit and a coughing fit is NEVER, EVER a good thing on live television. Donât you think?â
âYeah, I guess youâre right.â
âOkay, so now that we have that settled, can you go and get some cough drops?â She holds out a twenty-dollar bill.
âSure.â I smile, snatching it from between Andyâ s
