okay. Mom says itâs okay if you say itâs okay, cousin Jeff. So, say itâs okay. Please!â She clasped her hands in a parody of prayer.
I had to smile.
âNo,â said Karen, shaking her head. âI canât take the risk.â
âYouâre just my bodyguard,â cried Debby. âYouâre not my boss!â
I pointed a forefinger at Debby. âYou stay here.â Then I hooked the same finger at Karen and said, âLetâs go outside and have a chat.â
Out in the yard, we paused, and Karen said, âWhatâs this all about?â
I looked at her dark form and could almost see the anger in her. Then I told her about Burt Phillips.
When I was through, she said, âAnd Walt Pomerlieu thinks it might have something to do with Cricket being here at this house?â
âHe said heâd have to presume that.â
âMe, too,â said Karen, turning and looking out into the darkness. âWe wonât tell Debby about this. Thereâs no point in alarming her.â
âThatâs up to you. In any case, I think it might be smart if you change your mind about spending the night at John and Mattie Skyeâs place. If you go right now, nobody will know where Debby is, and she should be perfectly safe. Tomorrow, when itâs daylight again, we may be able to see things more clearly.â
She hesitated. âHow well do you know the Skyes?â
âWell enough to send Debby to them, and then some.â
âI donât like any of this. I should call Walt.â
âHeâs calling here later tonight. Iâll give him the news. Meanwhile, the fewer people who know about this, the better. The president and his wife know where she is.â
âThe president and his wife donât know much about security.â She stared into the dark forest. âI gave up cigarettes a couple of years ago. I wish I had one right now.â
I was feeling jumpy and impatient. âWhy donât you tell me whatâs going on.â
âI donât know what you mean.â
âSure you do,â I said. âYou and Walt Pomerlieu and Ted and Joan are all nervous as cats in a dog pound. Itâs probably normal for people in your line of work to be on the lookout for trouble, but youâre all way beyond that stage. Thereâs something specific thatâs bothering you, and since Iâve got Debby here, and since this Burt Phillips stuff has you all turned inside out, I think I should know whatâs got you spooked. What is it?â
She shook her head. âNothing you need worry about. All you have to do here is be the good host. Leave the rest of it to us.â She sounded as chippy as I felt.
âIâll tell you what I think,â I said. âI think that thereâs a very particular threat against the president or his family, and I think itâs tied to this island. I think you think that somebody right here on the Vineyard is plotting something bad, and I donât think youâve got a handle on it yet.â
âYouâre imagining things,â said Karen.
âIâm not imagining that Burtâs got himself murdered, and that the trees up where it happened are probably full of federal agents. Whatâs going on?â
âI think youâd better talk to Walt about this.â
âYou mean there is something to talk about?â
âYou talk to Walt. If weâre going to spend the night with the Skyes, weâd better get going.â When she stepped into the screened porch, Debby met her and got the good news.
âOh, thank you, cousin Jeff!â said Debby, smiling.
âThank Karen, not me.â
âOh, thank you, dear sister, without whom I could not survive!â She gave Karen a kiss.
âPack your bag,â Karen smiled, âand weâll hit the road.â
When they were both in the car, I leaned against the driverâs
