mother said more emphatically, âyou need something in your stomach. Now, while Tom and I load the horses, Iâd like you to go get something to eat. Weâll give you a half hour. Then come back here, and youâll ride home with me.â
Skye dismounted her horse and handed the reins to Mr. Chambers. âThanks, Dad,â she said. âI could use a burger or something. What do you say, Morgan?â
âYeah, I could use something to eat too.â Morgan glanced at the grandstand. âBut Iâm planning to meet some of the kids from church. They were sitting on the top row a while ago. They must be on their way over here now.â
Mr. Chambers retrieved Morganâs wheelchair from the truck and set it on the dirt-packed walkway that led from the show ring to the rest of the fairgrounds. Morgan handed Blazeâs reins to Mrs. Chambers while Mr. Chambers loosened Morganâs legs from the Velcro safety strips on her saddle, gently slid her off into his arms, and placed her onto her chair.
âThanks,â Morgan said, glancing at Skye and Sooze. âHey, you two, come with me. Skye and I donât have to be back in a half hour, do we, Mrs. C?â
âNo, you have the rest of the afternoon,â Mrs. Chambers said as she tied Blaze to the back of their hauling trailer. âSooze is the only one who needs to go home.â
âThatâs so not fair,â Sooze whined.
âDuh. Lifeâs not fair!â Skye said sarcastically. Then she asked casually, âHey, Morgan, is Chad here?â
âHe was supposed to be, but I havenât seen him yet,â Morgan replied with a smile. âCome with me, and maybe heâll join us along the way.â
Sooze crowded herself next to Skye. âNo, weâll do our own thing. Thank you.â
An artificial smile masked Skyeâs regret at not getting to see Chad. âSooze and I can grab something to eat and then weâll meet you back here.â
âSounds good. Then we can do the fair thing with all the kids later, okay? Hey, here they come now.â Morgan pointed across the field.
Sooze folded her arms angrily. âThis stinks! You guys always get to have all the fun.â
Mrs. Chambers walked from the back of the trailer like she was stomping ants. âSooze, itâs time you learned that there are consequences for unwise decisions and actions. Thatâs the way itâs going to be,â she said emphatically.
âCome on,â Skye said to Sooze, tugging her arm, âyou only have a half hour. Donât waste it arguing.â
Mr. Chambers pulled a wallet from his back pocket. âDo you girls have enough money?â
âI do,â Morgan answered. She moved ahead slowly. âWhere else can I spend that megabucks allowance you give me?â
âIâve got money,â said Sooze.
âMe too,â Skye answered. âSo I guess weâre out of here.â
Morgan stopped in front of Skye, her troubled eyes reaching beyond her smiling face. âSkye,â she pleaded, âdonât you think you should go with us?â

W ell â â Skye hesitated. I would like to see Chad , she thought.
âMorgan, we donât need bodyguards,â Sooze huffed. âRight, Skye?â
âSkye â â Mrs. Chambersâ voice oozed with caution.
Mr. Chambers glanced back as he led Blaze to the trailer. âRemember, girls, youâre on the honor system. Weâll trust you as long as you donât give us any reason not to. And Sooze, youâre already up to your neck in quicksand.â
Morgan looked down the walkway. âHere come the guys now.â
Sooze grabbed Skyeâs arm, abruptly pulling her away. âCome on. Letâs go!â
âLater.â Skye said to Morgan. Iâd rather be going with you , she thought. She glanced back at the three approaching friends. Each yelled hello and
