the ledger back.”
“You have movies of me? The ones Samuel made?” Angel appeared shocked.
“Yes, I bought them from Samuel. Long story, but basically, he was selling them to a production company. I offered the company more money than they paid, and I became their new owner. Like I said, Angel, I like women and watching them but only if it’s consensual, and those movies weren’t made with consent.”
“Thank you, Adrian. I appreciate you doing that.” Angel walked over and kissed Adrian on the cheek. “Will you let me know if you find the ledger?”
“If the ledger isn’t in the storage facility, I’ll be back.” He made sure he lowered the tone in his voice. “If I think you are holding out on me in any way, then my next visit may not be as pleasant for you. Do you understand, Angel?”
“Yes, I understand.” Angel’s voice was barely a whisper as she replied.
Angel locked the door behind Adrian, wishing she had a chain or some kind of barricade to make the house more secure in case he decided to return. How on earth did he have a key to the house, and who else had seen the movies Samuel had made? Angel sank onto her lounge, totally deflated. What would she do if Adrian didn’t find the ledger? Angel looked at the clock. It was : a.m. Her head should have been aching from a good night out that involved too much to drink. Instead, it ached from stress. So much for making good choices where men were concerned, not even one day after making her decision she had fucked Adrian Hastings. Her new life’s resolution wasn’t off to a great start.
Angel’s thoughts turned to Christian and Daniel as she wandered to the bedroom and flopped down despondently onto the bed. If they knew what a mess she was in, they would never have invited her anywhere. In fact, she doubted they would have even given her a second look.
If things were different…if things were different maybe someone like them would fall in love with me.
But Angel knew things weren’t different, and no hope in the world would make them different. The only thing that would was a bloody ledger she had no idea how to find. Her life was becoming hopeless again, just as it was when Samuel was alive. She allowed herself the luxury a shedding a few self-pitying tears as she finally drifted off to sleep.
Daniel sat on Steve’s veranda drinking his morning coffee. The friends had arrived home in the early hours of the morning very tired and incredibly inebriated. Luckily for Daniel, he didn’t tend to suffer from hangovers. He’d already showered and was now enjoying his coffee, the fresh air, and the morning paper. Christian was taking a shower to try and wake up before they headed home. Kathy had staggered back to bed after making sure there was a good supply coffee and warm croissants for the men. Steve was dressed and ready to leave the house after receiving an early morning call requesting he go into work.
“I don’t need this shit today,” Steve announced as he walked out onto the veranda with his coffee and a plate of buttered croissants. “Can’t criminals learn to take weekends off?”
“Not in your department, mate.” Christian followed Steve onto the deck, coffeepot in hand. “Weekends would have to be the busiest time for drug sales, wouldn’t it?”
“I’m not in sales man. Let the uniform guys handle that. I play with the big fish, remember?” Steve took a gulp of coffee.
“So you’re not actually going to work. You’re going fishing,” Christian joked.
“Yeah, I wish,” Steve grumbled as he shoved a pastry in his mouth before finishing off his mug of coffee. “I don’t understand how a beautiful woman can get a man that has been so careful, so untouchable, and so bloody evasive of the law to expose himself the way this guy I’m investigating did last night. We’ve had this guy on the radar for an eternity, nothing, all only suspicions, until last night.”
