my Girl Scouts guidebook.â
âPoison ivy?â Bria gasped. âAs in the stuff that makes you all itchy and rashy?â
Anya nodded. âYouâre welcome.â
âOh, so thatâs what the red leaf on the map meant,â Scarlett said, making a note with a black pen on the side of the paper. âThese map drawings could be a little better.â
âOur map reader could be a lot better,â Liberty said.
âDo you want to give it a try?â Scarlett said, throwing the map at her feet. âHonestly, I have had enough of everyone complaining and blaming me!â
Rochelle placed a hand on Scarlettâs shoulder. âIf you lose it, we will all lose it,â she reminded her. âScarlett, youâre our leader. We need you tolead.â She picked up the map and handed it to her.
âIâm just so tired,â Scarlett moaned. âAnd itâs getting darker.â
âThen letâs get where weâre going,â Rochelle said. âAnya and Bria, youâre on ambulance duty.â She pointed to Liberty. âIf she talks too much, just drop her.â
âNot funny,â Liberty said through gritted teeth. âI am injured. Can we show some respect?â
âLetâs all show some respect for each other,â Scarlett said, picking up her bag and resuming the walk down the trail. âItâs the only way weâre going to get out of this mess.â
Chapter 14
A Bewitching Tale
By the time they reached the bottom of the trail and settled on a spot to set up camp, it was nearly dusk. Carrying Liberty had definitely slowed them down.
âWe better move fast before we lose the light,â Scarlett instructed them. She opened the tent bag and looked inside. It was a mess of poles, hinges, and fabric pieces. âDoes it come with an instruction booklet?â she asked, scratching her head.
âLet me Google âHow to build a tent,â â Bria suggested. But her phone had no service, noteven when she held it up above her head. âI canât get a single bar,â she said, shaking her phone. âIt must be all those trees getting in the way.â
âAny other suggestions?â Scarlett sighed. âWe gotta get this thing up.â
Gracie kneeled over the parts on the ground. âItâs just like my Barbie tent,â she said. âThe one I set up in the backyard and decorated with your hair bows, Scoot.â She suddenly remembered that she hadnât exactly mentioned borrowing her sisterâs hair accessories for decor. âOops! Sorry!â
Scarlett didnât even care about the bows at the moment. She was exhausted, and just wanted a place for them all to sleep tonight. âDo you think you can figure it out?â
Gracie studied the pieces and sat down to work. She clicked one pole into another, then poked it through the hem in the bottom of the fabric. In less than an hour, sheâd put the entire thing together by herself. She zipped the front door closed and stood back to admire her handiwork.
âEasy-peasy,â she said, dusting off her hands. âItâs not as pretty as my Barbie tent, but it works.â
âGracie, you never cease to amaze!â Scarlett said, hugging her little sister. âGreat job.â
They unrolled all the sleeping bags outside the tent, and piled a bunch of logs in the center of a circle to start a campfire.
âI think I saw this in a movie once,â Bria said, rubbing two sticks together. But no matter how hard she rubbed, there was no sparkâonly a few pitiful puffs of smoke. The logs refused to catch.
âMaybe we need kindling?â Anya suggested. âYa know, something to get it started? This wood is kinda damp.â
A lightbulb went off over Rochelleâs head. âDidnât you say you brought magazines?â she asked Liberty. âWe could use the paper to start the fire.â
