to be on crutches?â she asked. âMaybe Libertyâs really hurt. Maybe itâs serious.â She pointed to Liberty who was now in tears and cradling her bandaged knee.
Rochelle pouted. âFine. Lean on me,â she said. She offered her arm to Liberty, who looked positively horrified. âCome on. Do you want to stay here all day?â
âI donât think I can put pressure on my leg,â Liberty said through gritted teeth. âI think youâll have to carry me.â
Rochelleâs eyes grew wide. âCarry you? Are you nuts? There is no way Iâm gonna carry you!â
âWeâll all take turns,â Scarlett volunteered. âWe can make a chair with our arms and carry Liberty down the mountain.â
âOoh! Can I get carried, too?â Gracie asked. âThat sounds fun.â
Rochelle rolled her eyes. âFine.â She linked arms with Scarlett, and Liberty sat between them. âThis is the worst day of my life,â she said as they struggled to make their way with their teammate in tow. She sneezed again, this time in Libertyâs hair.
â
Eww!
Cut it out!â Liberty screamed.
âWould you like me to cover my nose and drop you?â Rochelle asked her. â âCause thatâs my only option.â
Liberty made a face. âThis is the worst day of
my
life! A bloody knee
and
a shower of boogers.â
Three hours later, they were nearly at the bottom of the trail. âIt says to bear to the right,â Bria pointed out. âPast Chickasaw Cave.â
âDid you say chicken and slaw?â Anya asked.
Bria shook her head. âI said Chickasaw. Itâs an old Native American tribal name. Not a KFC!â
âOh.â Anya sighed. âIâm so hungry, Iâm hearing things. I think Iâm delirious.â
Liberty dug into her purse and pulled out a box of Belgian chocolates. âHere. Have one,â she said.
âOMG! You have truffles in your purse and you didnât say anything?â Anya grabbed them out of her hand and began stuffing them in her mouth.
âI forgot,â Liberty explained. âI was a little busy bleeding.â
âThis is heaven,â Anya said, licking her fingers. âLiberty, I never thought Iâd say this, but I love you!â
âHey, save some for me!â Gracie said, trying to wrestle one away from her.
âAre you kidding? You ate everything in our food bags! You were as piggy as your pink piggy, Gracie!â Anya held the box of chocolates high above her head so she couldnât reach it.
Gracieâs eyes welled up.
Oh, no
, Scarlett thought.
Here we go â¦
Anya saw the look on the little girlâs face and stopped herself from popping the last one in her mouth. âIâm sorry, Gracie. Here, you can have one. Please donât cry!â She handed her a dark-chocolate candy with a hazelnut-cream center.
Gracie gobbled it down and smiled. âThank you. That was yumilicious.â
Scarlett was too busy trying to figure out the map to think of food. âIâm not sure what this little red leaf symbol here means,â she said, showing it to Bria. âItâs not anywhere on the key.â
Bria shrugged. âWell, itâs pretty. It must be those pretty red leaves over there.â She pointed to a patch growing around the base of a tree. âMaybe Iâll pick one for my scrapbook at home.â
She was bending over a leaf when Anya suddenly screamed
âNooooooo!â
and tackled her to the ground. Bria landed facedown in a pile of leaves and mud with Anya on top of her.
âGet off!â Bria said, spitting out a mouthfulof dirt. âJust because I made costumes you didnât like doesnât mean you have to beat me up!â
âNo, I wasnât trying to beat you up,â Anya said, helping Bria to her feet. âI was trying to save you from getting poison ivy. I remember it from
