old.â
âAt least.â
They hadnât said much on the hour drive to the drop-off point where the road ended. They were both trying to wake up.
That was three hours ago, and the big stack of pancakes Skelly had eaten was making him so drowsy he could hardly keep his eyes open. Seeing Dave Niwaâs police car in the drive roused him, though.
He braked to a halt and climbed stiffly from the truck. âWhatâs up?â Two hours on the road and less than four hours of sleep hadnât left him in the mood to beat around the bush.
âWhereâve you been?â No joking around. In fact Skelly wasnât sure heâd ever seen Dave so serious. And heâd known him for ages.
âUh, whatâs wrong?â
âSkelly, I mean it. Whereâve you been?â
âI took Tanner to Halawa to set up camp. Weâve got a group coming in tomorrow. Whatâs going on?â
âYou were with Tanner?â
âYeah, since about six last night.â
âThatâs when I dropped him.â Niwaâs sternness ebbed a bit. âHe spent the night with you and Helene?â
âNo, we stayed here. Had to get up too early.â Skelly shut the truckâs door. âWhatâs up?â
Niwa scuffed a size thirteen in the gravel walkway. âJenny Williams died last night.â
âOh shit.â Skelly fell back against the truck as if someone had pushed him. âShit,â he repeated, much softer.
âYeah.â
âWhereâs Luke?â
âHe found her.â
âOh no, man.â
âYeah. He called 911 for an ambulance this morning. They called me.â Niwaâs voice had a hitch in it. âI took him to my house.â
âHeâs friends with your daughter, isnât he?â
âYeah. You got any way to get hold of Tanner?â
Skelly pulled out a two-way radio. âDoubt if heâll have his on yet. Doesnât have a cell phone, either.â He turned it on and keyed the transmission switch. âTanner? Tanner, you there? Over.â
The radio crackled, but no one responded.
âWe get decent reception in the storage cabin, but once you start around the point, itâs iffy. On the water, itâs hit and miss.â
âAny idea when heâll come back?â
âDunno for sure. Iâd say mid-afternoon.â Skelly frowned into the climbing sun. âHeâll need a few hours to set up. Say, until ten or eleven. Then itâll depend if he goes to his cabin, or turns around and comes back to town.â
âWhereâs his cabin?â
âSomewhere near the north shore, back in Halawa Valley. He has a little research lab there.â
âA lab?â It was Niwaâs turn to frown.
âYeah, heâs working on seaweed extracts. Scientific stuff.â Skelly sounded proud.
âReally?â This was news to Niwa. He didnât know Tanner had been doing anything but helping Skelly out.
âYeah, he might have a job again. I mean, other than a tour guide.â
âSo he goes there when heâs not working for you?â
âMostly.â Skelly shrugged. âI donât keep track of him.â
âDid he say anything about Lukeâs game?â
âYeah, he plans on being there.â
âWas he going to contact you to pick him up in Halawa?â
Skelly shook his head. âCanât. Iâve gotta meet the tour group at the airport this afternoon, take them to the Lodge for the night, then stop in Kaunakakai for supplies.â
âHowâs he planning to get back?â
Skelly mimed thumbing a ride. âYou gonna look for him, tell him about Jenny?â Skelly sounded glad he didnât have to.
âI guess so.â Niwa turned to go, but Skelly had another question.
âWhat happened to her?â Skellyâs arms hung limply at his sides, the radio dangling from one wrist.
âDonât know
