shrug off the bad vibe as we raced through the tunnel and to the clubhouse beyond the metal door. I was nervous, clutching my dadâs compass on my backpack. Therewas no excitement at all this time aroundâwe knew that bad news was waiting for us.
Black and Stark greeted us and passed several copies of a printed email. It took me a second to scan the page:
TO: Mustang
FROM: Dagger
Babushka has been obtained. Artifact in sight.
Move forward with plan as scheduled.
I raised my hand like I was in class. âUm, whatâs a Babushka?â
Stark glanced at President Griffin, who still had her eyes glued to the paper.
Ben looked confused, tooâthe guy didnât know everything after all.
Stark took a breath before she said, âA Babushka is an extremely dangerous explosive device.â
The bad guy had a bomb.

TUESDAY, 8:30 P.M .
âTHIS BABUSHKA IS BAD NEWS,â AGENT Stark said with a quiver in her voice. âItâs a Russian-made bomb, and when it is triggeredââ
âCan we just focus on a solution here?â President Griffin said, interrupting Stark. She folded the printout, and I saw that her hands were trembling. âWeâre talking about my daughterâs safety. Do we know that this bomb threat is even valid?â
Stark nodded. âWe checked the inventory, maâam. A Babushka went missing from one of our military installations a few days ago.â
President Griffin nodded, looking defeated.
âBut the bad guy still doesnât have the Dangerous Double, right?â I said, trying to look on the bright side. âSo if we find it first, he wonât be able to go forward with his plan.â I was about to add âand blow up the White House,â but stopped myself.
âHow is the search for the coat going, kids?â Black asked.
âIâm waiting on something, but I have a plan,â Ben said.
âI have a solid lead, too,â I added, hoping I sounded confident. âTwo leads, actually.â I was counting Benâs package and the spy contact.
âHow about the search for the mole?â President Griffin asked Black and Stark. âAre you any closer to uncovering the traitorâs identity?â
Stark looked flustered, which I took as a bad sign. âThis Dagger person used staff computers to send the emails. So far, itâs proving hard to find a trail.â Her voice faded
âWeâre working on it, Madam President,â Black said. âBut in light of this escalated threat, you may want to reconsider canceling the ball.â
âNo,â President Griffin said resolutely. âCelebrating Americaâs History has been planned for monthsâthere are events at the Smithsonian, Mount Vernon. Iâm scheduled to give a speech at the Lincoln Memorial for festivities on Friday.â She handed her printout to Stark. âI wonât be terrorizedâand whatâs to say this Dagger person wonât strike next week, or next month?â
We were all silent, because everyone knew she was right. We had to catch the bad guy, and that meant going ahead with the ball.
President Griffin looked at Black, then to Stark. âFind themole and the Dangerous Double.â She looked at her watch. âYou have just over forty-six hours.â
Ben, President Griffin, Wilson, Stark, and I went back down the tunnel to the White House after Albert Black assured the president we were on the case.
âHowâs your search for the Dangerous Double coming?â Ben asked behind me as we walked. I tried hard not to seem like we were together. Stark, President Griffin, and Wilson were in deep conversation about the hunt for the mole.
âGood. Great, actually,â I said, thinking of his package. âHow about you? Any new clues get delivered yet?â
Ben squinted. âIâll have the artifact secured by the end of the day tomorrow, latest. Iâm the top secret agent
