this isnât the place for him.â
âOh, here you are, Nancy,â Shawn said, coming to the entrance to the coatroom. His blue eyes flashed between Nancy and Loreen. âIs everything okay here?â he asked.
âNo problem,â Loreen said quickly as she pushed past Nancy and left the coatroom.
Shawn looked at Nancy. âWhat happened?â
âLoreen wants you back,â Nancy answered directly. âShe told me to stay away.â
Shawn looked sad. âLoreen and I had a greatthing going. Leaving Arizona just seems to have thrown her for a loop.â
âIt must be hard to make a big move like that,â Nancy told him. âMaybe you shouldnât be so tough on Loreen.â
âMaybe.â Shawn shrugged. âSo whatâs the next step here, Nancy?â
âI think I should discuss those paintings with Felice Wainwright,â Nancy answered.
âGood idea,â Shawn said. âI have her unlisted number in my office.â
âSorry to send you running up there again,â Nancy said. âIâll go with you.â
As they climbed the stairs Nancy considered what Loreen had said to her. The head waitress now had two possible motives for wanting to wreck Shawnâs business. One was revenge for being dumped. The more likely one, however, was that she wanted Shawn to give up and go back to Arizona with her.
âHereâs Jackâs address and Felice Wainwrightâs number,â Shawn said when theyâd reached his office. âYou can use the phone here but please donât tell Mrs. Wainwright whatâs been going on. I canât risk her canceling the dinner.â
âOkay,â Nancy agreed. Shawn left, and a moment later Bess appeared in the doorway.
âHi,â she said. âI came in just as you were headed upstairs. Whatâs new?â
âLots,â Nancy said. She filled Bess in on everything that had happened.
âWow!â Bess exclaimed. âYou must be completely exhausted. This case is getting creepier by the minute.â
âI know,â Nancy agreed as she punched in Felice Wainwrightâs number. After speaking briefly with the butler, Nancy was connected directly to the heiress.
âHello,â Felice Wainwright answered.
Nancy quickly concocted a story. She said she had seen Joseph Spazienteâs work at the Arizona House and was interested in buying a painting. She asked if Felice knew where she could learn more about the artist and his work.
To Nancyâs relief, Felice warmed instantly to the subject. Her voice became animated with enthusiasm. âMy dear, you have exquisite taste,â she said. âI believe Joseph will be a very important painter. Heâs a genius, really. I happen to have an original Spaziente, which the artist himself has just finished. Would you care to come see it?â
âAbsolutely,â Nancy said, trying not to sound too eager. âWhen can I come?â
âLet me see,â Felice mused. âIâm attending a dinner party tonight. Can you come now?â
âIâll be there in fifteen minutes,â Nancy said.
âDo you need directions?â Felice asked.
âYes, please,â Nancy said, thinking it was unwise to admit that she knew exactly where the woman lived.
âYouâre going to the Wainwright mansion!â Besssquealed when Nancy hung up. âI donât believe it. Oh, let me come with you, please? I have to see it!â
âDonât you have to work?â Nancy asked, laughing.
Bess frowned. âOh . . . right.â
Just then, Shawn came into the office. âIâm heading over to the Wainwright estate,â Nancy told him. âIâll be back as soon as I can.â
âCan I go with her?â Bess asked. âItâs really warm out. No one is going to have a coat today.â
âOkay,â Shawn said with a laugh. âGo ahead. But
