Canyon and other desert scenes adorned the wall. âI ran down to Poster Corner in the mall and picked theseup when they opened at nine this morning,â Shawn said proudly.
âThey look great,â Nancy said. âWhat have you done with the slashed paintings?â
âI put them into the storage closet,â he replied.
âWhat will you tell Felice Wainwright?â Nancy asked.
âI donât know.â Shawn sighed. âMaybe Iâll tell her my customers loved them so much that I sold all seven of them. Sheâll probably insist I buy more.â
Nancy laughed softly. âItâs not easy being a business person, is it?â
Shawn shook his head. âAnd you think Jack has something to do with all this?â he asked.
âI donât know what to think right now,â Nancy said honestly. âBut Iâd like to check him out. Could you give me Jackâs phone number and address?â
âTheyâre upstairs in my file,â Shawn told her, heading toward his office. âBut Jackâs not home. Iâve been calling him all morning. No one picks up the phone.â
âIs he scheduled to work today?â Nancy asked.
âTonight,â Shawn said. âWeâll have the chance to confront him then.â
âIf he shows up,â Nancy added.
As they reached the hallway, Loreen appeared in the front doorway. âYouâre here early.â Shawn greeted her with a tense smile.
âA little,â Loreen said, casting a frosty glance at Nancy. âWhy was the back door locked?â
âI want to see whoâs coming in and out,â Shawn told her. âI donât want any more fires or secret additions to the food.â Then he excused himself and disappeared up the stairs.
Realizing that this was her chance to talk to Loreen, Nancy stayed behind. Maybe Loreen would reveal something new about the case. Since both intruders had been men, Nancy knew that Loreen hadnât been at the restaurant last night. Still, it wasnât unheard of for a woman to hire someone to work for her. And after Loreenâs fit of anger last night, Nancy still considered her a suspect.
Nancy followed the head waitress into the coat-room, where she was hanging up her denim jacket. âLoreen,â Nancy said, âwe seem to have gotten off to a bad start. Iâm not sure why, but I just want to say thatââ
âDonât play Little Miss Innocent with me,â Loreen snapped. âI know what youâre up to.â
Nancy took a step back. She had to think fast. What did Loreen know?
âLet me fill you in on one thing,â Loreen continued. âDespite what you may have heard, Shawn is taken. He and I are simply having an extended loversâ quarrel, thatâs all.â
Deciding to take a bold approach, Nancy lifted her chin defiantly. âThatâs not how it looks to me,â she said, baiting Loreen. Nancy knew that angry people sometimes revealed things that they might not ordinarily say.
Loreenâs pale skin turned a deep crimson. âYou donât stand a chance with him!â
âI think Shawn is cute, and he appears to be available,â Nancy taunted.
Loreenâs emotional temperature dropped from red-hot to an intimidating cool in a matter of seconds. âListen,â she purred, stepping toward Nancy, âeverything was fine between Shawn and me until we came here. Then all you flirty River Heights girls started throwing yourselves at Shawn. Between that and all the time this place takes to run, well, it was just too much for any relationship to take.â
âMaybe you should go back to Arizona if you hate it here so much,â Nancy suggested calmly, hoping to anger Loreen further so she would reveal something.
âMaybe I just will,â Loreen replied. âBut you can be sure it will be with Shawn. Itâs only a matter of time before he realizes that
