left?â
He smiled.
âI can make more,â he said. âMr. Tesla has acquired a taste for it.â
âGood,â she said. âI acquired a taste for it a long time ago.â
She came and sat at the table with him. She brought the pot and emptied it into his cup.
âHow long do you intend to stay with us?â he asked.
âI donât know. I guess if I stay here, Iâll have to face those four, and if I go back, Iâll have to face them.â
âBetter you stay here, then,â Clint said. âFace them with me, if the time comes.â
âAs you say,â she said. âMeanwhile, maybe I can help.â
âTeslaâs equipment is heavy,â Clint said. âWeâre waiting for two more men to arrive with still another buckboard load, and then weâll all unload it.â
âAnother buckboard?â she said. âFrom Denver?â
âYes.â
âItâll have to go through Gunnison, like you did,â she said.
âThatâs right.â
âThen those four men . . .â
âWill probably take it.â
âYes.â
âBut what would they do with all that equipment?â he asked. âThey wouldnât even know what it was for. No, something else is more likely.â
âLike what?â
âLike they would follow it.â
âFollow it here,â she said.
âYes.â
âSo Iâm right,â she said. âWeâll have to face them.â
âProbably, and yetââ
âAnd yet what?â
And yet it wasnât those four men he had been hired to protect Tesla from. It was others, unknown others rumored to want him dead.
âNothing,â he said. âWeâll have to set some watches. You and me.â
âNot Mr. Tesla?â
âHe has other work that he came here to do,â Clint said. âBesides, he wouldnât see what you and I will see. No, itâll just be you and me.â
âWatch from where?â
âWeâll need to see them before they get here,â he said. âTheyâll be coming from Denver. Weâll have to find ourselves a good point to watch from.â
âLetâs do it, then,â she said.
They both stood up.
âIâll tell Tesla weâre going out,â he said.
TWENTY-SIX
Clint and Miranda walked away from the house, back in the direction she had come. No one had come up to that house in a long time prior to Clint and Teslaâs arrival. There was a road, but it was partially overgrown with grass. Still visible, though.
âOnce they spot this road, theyâll follow it up,â Clint said.
âSo we need to find a place to watch this road from, right?â
âRight. But one of us will always have to be back at the house, as well.â
âWhy?â she asked. âIsnât the danger coming from here?â
âThe danger we know of,â he said.
âYou mean, thereâs more?â she asked. âDo you mean the cat?â
âLook,â he said, âIâm here to keep an eye on Tesla while he does some experiments. Thereâs a rumor that someone might try to hurt him, or kill him.â
âSo youâre his bodyguard?â
âThatâs right.â
âWhoâs payinâ you?â
âI canât say.â
Miranda shrugged.
âDoesnât matter much to me,â she said. âOkay, so when one of us is out here, the other one is back at the house with Mr. Tesla.â
âRight. So letâs find our spot.â
They found a good vantage point where theyâd be hidden by a stand of trees. They were able to see down the road a few hundred yards.
âIf that buckboard is loaded the way you say,â she commented, âweâll be able to hear it cominâ.â
âThatâs true.â
âDo you want me to take the first watch?â she asked.
âOkay,â he said,
