with me?â
âWhere?â
âTo Japan.â
She stared at him. âYou were serious about that?â
âVery serious.â
She frowned. âRoderickââ
âIâve already sent my transition team over there to evaluate Kawamotoâs company and begin the restructuring process. Iâll be joining them in a few weeks to check their progress. Iâd like you to go with me.â
Even before heâd finished speaking, Lena was shaking her head emphatically. âI canât, Roderick. Itâs out of the question.â
âWhy?â
âWhy?â she echoed in disbelief. âDo you even have to ask? First of all, weâre not a couple. And even if we were, itâd be hard for me to just drop everything and go flying halfway around the world with you. I have responsibilities. I have a job. Speaking of which,â she said, glancing pointedly at her watch, âI should really be getting back to the office. Iâve been gone over an hour.â
Roderick gave her a look of exaggerated patience. âDidnât we already establish that your boss wonât care how long youâre gone?â
âWell, I care. I have a lot of work to do.â
He smiled indolently. âSecuring this grant is supposed to be your top priority,â he reminded her.
He had her there. âFine,â Lena conceded, heaving a resigned breath. âName your terms.â
âYouâre ready to negotiate?â
âYes.â Even as the word left her mouth, her nerves tightened. Why did she have a feeling that negotiating with Roderick Brand would be as dangerous as negotiating with the devil?
âAll right. Here are my terms.â He leaned forward in his chair and pinned her with his dark, penetrating gaze. âIâll approve the grant on one condition.â
âWhat is it?â Lenaâs voice was barely above a whisper.
âYou have to agree to spend the next three weeks as my personal companion.â
His meaning didnât register at first. âYourâ¦companion?â
âYeah.â He smiled, slow and sinfully wicked. âTo put it bluntly, Lena, Iâm asking you to be my sexual companionâone who will fulfill my every need.â
Chapter Seven
A s Roderickâs words sank in, fury erupted in Lenaâs chest. Fury combined with a nauseating sense of déjà vu.
With as much dignity as she could muster, she rose from her chair and stared down at Roderick with a look of icy disdain. âI think youâd better take me back to work now.â
He shook his head. âWeâre not finished yet.â
âOh, yes, we are!â As she spun away from the table his hand shot out, seizing her wrist.
âLet go of me,â she hissed furiously. She tried to yank her arm free, but his grip was too strong.
âWait,â he said, jumping to his feet. âJust hear me out.â
âI donât need to! Youâre out of your damn mind!â
The waiter appeared, took one look at them and beat a hasty retreat, closing the curtained doors behind him.
Roderick rounded the table and pulled Lena roughly into his arms. She struggled against him, but she might as well have been wrestling an eight-hundred-pound Siberian tiger. Even in her anger she was no match for Roderickâs strength or his fierce, focused determination.
âListen to me,â he growled, cradling her face between his big hands. âLet me explainââ
âIâm not a damn prostitute!â Lena raged.
âI know, sweetheart. Iâm sorry, I wasnât trying to offend you. I justâ hell. â He lowered his head and fastened his mouth to hers, smothering her startled gasp.
When she put her fists between them his arms went around her, holding her so tightly she couldnât escape. His warm, delicious taste invaded her senses as his tongue sank into her mouth. Her entire body shook, an explosive
