warned me,â said Holly. âI thought he was going to eat me.â
âI keep telling you, dragons donât eat meat.â
âYes, but . . .â
Karnataka looked up from his sweets. âWhat are you doing bringing a human down here, Dirk?â He said in a nasal whine. âYouâve finally lost it. You know the rules. You know what would happen. Youâre risking enough with all that detective nonsense as it is. If youâre not careful, youâll be sent down.â
âWhat happened to your voice?â asked Holly.
âOh, that?â said Karnataka, âThatâs just a voice-echo device. Itâs good for scaring away unwanted intruders. That and the red-eye projector. You like the flames? The flames are new,â he added excitedly.
âOh yes,â said Holly. âI thought the flames were terrific. Really scary.â
âYou see,â said Karnataka to Dirk. âI told you the flames were worth it. Scary, she said.â
âI didnât come down here to discuss your Wizard of Oz complex, Karny. I came here for information.â
âSure thing,â said Karnataka, throwing the last of the liquorice sweets up in the air and catching it in his mouth. âThat stuff really is the best. What can I do for you? Just name it. You have me at your disposal.â
âWhat have you got on a V. Grandin?â
Holly had never seen a face lose so much colour in so little time. Karnatakaâs yellow eyes whitened and he looked furtively from side to side as though suddenly scared that they were being watched.
âIâm . . . s . . . s . . . sorry,â stammered the dragon. âIâve never heard of no one of that name. Sorry I canât be more help, though and thanks for the liquorice.â He turned around and ran back into the darkness.
Holly and Dirk looked at each other. âBingo,â said Dirk and he walked slowly forwards.
Chapter Fourteen
âCome on, Karny,â Dirk called into the darkness. âPlay the game. You got your liquorice.â
Once again the large red eyes appeared and the deep voice echoed around the hall.
âThe great dragon Karnataka is not in at the moment,â it said. âBut please leave a message after the tone and heâll be sure to get back to you. Beeep!â
âKarny.â There was a taunting quality to Dirkâs voice. âYou canât hide from me.â
Holly walked by Dirkâs side. They approached the eyes. She had stopped being scared of them now as she could see that they were in fact two red lightsattached to something that looked like a giant ear trumpet.
âKarnataka forbids you to take one step further,â said the voice, with a hint of panic.
Dirk winked at Holly and walked around the strange device. Behind it was Karnataka, shaking with terror.
âYou are trespassing,â boomed his voice. âTrespass not against me or Iââ
âBoo,â said Dirk in Karnatakaâs ear, causing the dragon to jump a metre in the air.
âLeave me alone,â he said in his normal high-pitched voice.
âCome on,â said Dirk. âDo I have to force you?â
âDirk. I canât. I donât know anything.â
âIs that right?â said Dirk. âThen letâs change the subject. How about . . . say, the Dragon Councilâs Welsh gold reserves. Know anything about them?â
A fresh look of panic crossed Karnatakaâs face. âYou wouldnât,â he said. âYou canât prove anything.â
âThe Council arenât too fussy about proof. Remember what happened to poor Elsinor?â
âYou leave my brother out of this.â
âThey didnât have much proof on him, did they? And Iâm sure theyâd be interested to know how youcan afford all these trinkets,â Dirk said, pointing at the rows of giant sculptures.
âAll right,â said Karnataka, bowing
