Gracie!â
âMe, too.â Hayden smiled, high-fiving her. âNice job. You showed that Mandy whoâs boss.â
Rochelle saw Mandy standing with her team on the opposite side of the gym. She didnât look happy.
One down
, she thought,
a few more to go.
Junior Solos were up next. City Feetâs Regan did a bold Broadway-style dance number from
Anything Goes
, dressed in a sailor hat and blue sparkly leotard.
âHer
arabesques
are pretty impressive,â Scarlett whispered to Rochelle.
âYouâre way more talented than she is,â Rochelle assured her. âJust wait till I get this boot off. Sheâs no competition for either of us.â
The Teen Solos were next, with Addisonleading the pack. She strolled onstage dressed in a black dress, pearl necklace, and sunglasses. She was Audrey Hepburnâs character in
Breakfast at Tiffanyâs,
and she did a sad, haunting ballet to âMoon River.â
âWow,â Bria said, watching from the wings. âSheâs really amazing.â
âSheâs not bad,â Liberty said with a sniff. âWhere do you suppose Justine stole her from?â
As she walked back to the wings, Addison purposely bumped into Rochelle, knocking one of her crutches out from under her.
âWatch it!â Rochelle yelled, trying to steady herself.
âSorry,â Addison replied. âI forgot we had a little old lady limping around backstage. Itâs just not safe for you here. Maybe you should go home and take a nap.â
Rochelle gritted her teeth. âThe only ones going home are you guys . . . empty-handed,â she said. âBecause the Divas are going to win every title today.â
Addison laughed in her face. âI donât think so. Especially when âRockâ here needs a rocking chair.â
âItâs not nice to make fun of Rock,â Gracie spoke up. âSheâs hurt.â
Addison patted her on the head. âMaybe you could both go and take a nap. Babies need a lot of sleep.â
âI am not a baby!â Gracie screamed.
Hayden saw what was happening and rushed to Rochelleâs side.
âIs there a problem?â he asked calmly.
âSheâs being mean to me and Rock,â Gracie said, pointing an accusing finger at Addison.
âAw, I forgot you had a bodyguard to fight your battles for you, Rochelle.â Addison smirked.
âI donât need anyone to fight my battles,â Rochelle countered. She hoped that didnât hurt Haydenâs feelings, but she was not going to let this girl push her around, crutches or no crutches.
âSheâs right. Iâm not fighting anyoneâs battles,â Hayden interrupted. âIâm just sharing a little advice.â
âAdvice?â Addison laughed. âWhat advice could
you
possibly give me? Iâve been competing my whole life.â
Hayden ignored her bragging. â âI do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself,â â he said.
Addison looked at him, puzzled.
âWhat is that supposed to mean?â
âItâs a quote from Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest dancers of all time,â Hayden answered.
âHayden is really smart,â Gracie whispered to Rochelle.
âIt means you should stop picking on the Divas and worry about your own dancing,â he said. âBecause trust me . . . you need to worry. I just heard Justine saying that was the sloppiest
chaîné
sheâd ever seen.â
Addison looked petrified. She scanned the bleachers for her dance coach. âDid she really say that? Or are you making it up?â
Hayden grinned. He waved to no one in the bleachers. âHey, Justine! Over here! I found Addison for you.â
Addison took off without another nasty word.
âHayden is our hero!â Gracie exclaimed.
âI second that. Thanks for stomping on those Feet,â Rochelle
