added.
âYouâre welcome,â Hayden replied. âNo one picks on us Divas.â
Chapter 14
Dancing in the Rain
Anya was up nextâand she was more than a little nervous to be up against her former City Feet teammates.
âTheyâre just waiting for me to mess up,â she told Rochelle.
Rochelle knew she wasnât as good at pep talks as Scarlett, but she did her best. âYou wonât mess up. Youâre an amazing dancer,â she told Anya. âWeâre so lucky to have you on our team.â
Anya took a deep breath. âYou mean that? Because I could totally understand if you guys didnât want me. I was with the enemy once, afterall. And Mandy, Regan, and Addison are pretty mean to you.â
âAt first, we didnât want you,â Rochelle admitted. âBut youâve been a real team player. You saved our group dance.â
Anya smiled. âThanks, Rock.â
Rochelle adjusted the veil one last time to make sure it was draped down Anyaâs back. âNow go out there and show them what Divas are made of.â
Anyaâs classical routine was mesmerizing.
âI donât even know what this ballet is about and this dance is making me cry,â Bria whispered. âAnya just pours her heart into it.â
Rochelle nodded. She watched as Anya stretched her arms to the heavens and twirled effortlessly across the stage
en pointe
. Her face showed pain and anguishâand also hope and faith. She endedâas Rochelle had directedâby picking up the vase and bowing deeply before the audience.
The crowd gave her a standing ovation. Rochelle saw that Toni sat stubbornly in her seat, refusing to rise.
âWhatâs up with that?â Bria asked. âToni looks mad. Did Anya do something wrong?â
Rochelle gulped. âI think I did. I changed a few details of her dance.â
âRock, you didnât!â Scarlett exclaimed. âYou know how much that freaks Toni out!â
âIt was for her own good. It didnât make any sense!â
Scarlett shook her head. âIt doesnât matter. Never mess with Miss Toniâs choreography. No wonder thereâs steam coming out of her ears.â
Rochelle hoped that Haydenâs routine would take her teacherâs mind off her edited version of Anyaâs dance. He glided across the stage, smooth as silk, and twirled around the streetlamp before letting go of his umbrella. It floated up, up, up over his head. At least something worked! Then she noticed the umbrella hovering right in front of Haydenâs face. The heavy curved handle smackedhim several times in the head as he did his
pirouettes
.
âUh-oh,â Scarlett said, covering her eyes. âI hope he doesnât get a concussion.â
âHe better not!â Liberty warned Rochelle. âWe have our duet coming up.â
At the end of the routine, after beating Hayden up, the umbrella delicately drifted back down to earth.
âIâm so sorry!â Rochelle said, rushing to apologize. âI donât know what happened!â
âIâve never had a rumble with an umbrella,â he said, rubbing his forehead. He had a huge goose egg that was already turning black and blue. âIt packs quite a punch!â
âHere you go,â Liberty said sweetly, handing him an ice pack.
Rochelle growled. What else could go wrong today?
Chapter 15
Whoâs Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?
Rochelle braced herself for the two City Feet duets. She knew Justine would pull out all the stops, and she wasnât the slightest bit surprised when Mandy and Regan walked onstage wearing neon-blue-and-green tuxedos and sunglasses.
âWhat are they supposed to be?â Liberty cracked. âDisco penguins?â
The music started, and a blast of Korean lyrics filled the gym.
âOh, no.â Bria gulped. âIt couldnât be.â
Rochelle grabbed the program and read the name
