didnât look.
âWeâre satisfied,â Abi announced. âOkay, Marley. Now you get to ask Lia.â
Marley snatched her bra from Jules and headed to the bathroom. âWhat if I donât want to ask Lia?â
âYou can forfeit your turn, then.â
âGreat! Go ahead without me!â
Makayla shrugged. âAll right, Lia, so which do you choose?â
âTruth,â I said. I mean, all I had on under my top was one of those lame no-boob training bras. Marley had gone out and bought some real bras, apparently. Maybe in Chicago this summerâor after Iâd lied to her about âshopping.â It was weird she hadnât even mentioned it to me. Was she afraid Iâd accuse her of copying, or something?
Mak, Jules, and Abi huddled. All of my saliva dried into dust.
Then Jules smiled sweetly. âSo, Lia,â she said. âHereâs your question. Have you ever kissed a boy who wasnât your brother?â
âOh, sure,â I blurted.
Jules looked surprised but quickly recovered. âWho was it?â
âHis name is Tanner. Heâs a freshman in high school. I met him this summer up in Maine.â
âSeriously,â Abi said. It was more of a comment than a question. âSo what did he look like?â
âIncredibly cute. Brown eyes. Dark hair. Nice teeth.â Which was all true.
âYou just walked up to this strange boy and kissed him?â Makayla asked, her eyes wide.
âNo, of course not. I met him when my aunt invited his family over for dinner.â Also true. âAnd afterward we took a walk on the beach. And we kissed.â
Which of course wasnât.
âOn the mouth? â Jules was gaping.
âYeah,â I said.
âFor how long?â
âI donât know. A minute, maybe?â
Makaylaâs eyebrows rose. âAn entire minute ?â
âOkay, no. More like twenty seconds, maybe. Or fifteen. I wasnât counting.â
âHuh,â Abi said. She glanced at Makayla. âWere your eyes closed?â
I nodded.
âWere his?â
âYeah.â
âHow do you know that if your eyes were closed?â
I swallowed some saliva dust. âI mean, I assume they were. Iâm not positive.â
âSo what did his lips taste like?â Jules asked.
âChili. My aunt made veggie chili for supper. It was pretty good. Not too spicy. Although she did add some maple syrupââ
âWho pulled away first?â Makayla interrupted.
âMe. Although sort of both of us.â
Makayla, Abi, and Jules looked at each other. Something was communicated, a secret silent code you could decipher only if you went to their camp, swam in their lake, got stung by their mosquitoes.
Finally Abi took a tiny bite of cupcake. âAnd was there an exchange of spit?â
Jules and Mak both went, â Eww. â
âWhatâs wrong?â Abi asked, laughing. âItâs a totally fair question.â
âYou think so?â Now Marley was back, smoothing the front of her jersey. âBecause in the version of Truth orDare I played with my cousins, you werenât allowed to ask a bunch of follow-up questions.â
âWell, this is our version,â Makayla said.
âBut itâs still Truth or Dare, right? Not A Million Truths We Get to Keep Asking Lia About. So Iâm pretty sure by now itâs Abiâs turn. Isnât it?â
Abi did her laugh. âFine,â she said. âI choose dare. Lia, go ahead, dare me.â
Everyone looked at me, waiting.
I was too jittery to come up with a good one. So I dared Abi to sing a Disney song out the window, and she screamed âLet It Goâ at the top of her lungs.
The whole time I kept replaying our game and what Iâd just said, wishing I could somehow hit the Delete key.
