her stamina in the
face of his persistence. Was this how he won his battles? By pushing without any let-up until he had
    reached his goal?
„Why not?“ he drawled persuasively, lowering his head to put his lips at the point he had been teasing
    with his fingers.
„Because you’d only view it as a…a form of surrender!“ Selena could barely manage to get the words
out Her eyes squeezed tightly shut as the light, licking fire of his kiss penetrated into her blood.
„Would surrendering to me be so bad, sweetheart?“ She could feel his teeth in a tiny, exciting nip at the
curve of her throat and shivered.
„It would make you the winner,“ she whispered wretchedly.
„Don’t think of it in those terms,“ he coaxed, unfastening the first white button on the turquoise shirt „I
have to think of it in those terms because that’s the way you think of it!“ she protested.
„Selena,“ he begged, voice hardening as he kissed the gentle upper swell of her breast, „give yourself to
me tonight. Come to me. Surrender to me and I swear you won’t regret it. Afterward I’ll give you all the
time you need, I’ll woo you properly, if that’s what you want. But first I need to know you’re mine. I need
to know you’ve accepted me completely and that there won’t be any other men in your life.“
Selena stirred restlessly against him, not knowing if she was seeking a way to be free or a way to meld
more closely into his warmth. She was being seduced and she knew it, knew her body was absorbing the
growing impact of him with rising need and desire. What was it about this man that seemed to fascinate her
senses so much? It was uncanny. There had never been another man like him in her life.
„York, no. The answer is no. It has to be!“
„Let me show you the pictures I’ve been painting in my dreams, darling Selena,“ he said huskily. „You’
re the collector who has a place in her home for the artwork of all those dreaming artists you encourage.
Make a place for me. Please, Selena.“
Her head sank down onto his shoulder, her hands clinging to him as the tide of battle began to go against
her. She had known from the beginning that her body was weak and would probably go down easily in the
face of his advance, but she had thought her mind could hold out against him. With mental barriers firmly in
place she had hoped to protect her far weaker body. But it appeared that mind and body were irrevocably
connected and shared the same susceptibility to the kind of campaign York was waging.
„Something tells me you wouldn’t be content with a place on the wall or the end table,“ she sighed. „You
would want to dominate the whole gallery!“
„Yes,“ he said, not bothering to deny it.
Selena shut her eyes once again as he gathered her more securely to him. „I knew it,“ she muttered.
„The answer is no, York. I won’t go to bed with you tonight.“
„That’s it, sweetheart,“ he approved tenderly, surging strongly to his feet with her in his arms. „Close
your eyes and don’t think about it. Don’t think about it until morning.“
Selena felt herself being borne across the beige carpet, carried off into the night by a sleek and savage
jaguar. By morning it would be too late.

Four
„It won’t do you any good without the words, York,“ Selena said challengingly as he carried her into the
beige-and-brown bedroom with its king-size bed.
„Your surrender?“ he clarified, not pretending to misunderstand as he set her down gently on the tan
quilt. He swept the shape of her with a shuttered glance. „It would be better with the words, I’ll give you
that,“ he went on half-musingly as he shrugged out of his leather jacket and let it fall to the floor. Then the
edge of his mouth lifted in silent humor. „But we starving artists can’t be too choosy, can we? I’ll take what
I can get for now. The words can come later.“
She wanted him. How she wanted him! Her senses
