Vanessaâs throat was raw. âWhy did he stop me from seeing your letters?â
âMaybe he thought I would interfere with your career.â After a momentâs hesitation, Loretta touched her shoulder. âHe was wrong. I would never have stopped you from reaching for something you wanted and deserved so much. He was, in his way, protecting you and punishing me.â
âFor what?â
Loretta turned and walked to the window.
âDamn it, I have a right to know.â Fury had her on her feet and taking a step forward. Then, with an involuntary gasp, she was clutching her stomach.
âVan?â Loretta took her shoulders, moving her gently back to the bed. âWhat is it?â
âItâs nothing.â She gritted her teeth against the grinding pain. It infuriated her that it could incapacitate her, even for a moment, in front of someone else. âJust a spasm.â
âIâm going to call Ham.â
âNo.â Vanessa grabbed her arm. Her long musicianâs fingers were strong and firm. âI donât need a doctor. Itâs juststress.â She kept one hand balled at her side and struggled to get past the pain. âAnd I stood up too fast.â Very carefully, she relaxed her hand.
âThen it wonât hurt to have him look at you.â Loretta draped an arm over her shoulders. âVan, youâre so thin.â
âIâve had a lot to deal with in the last year.â Vanessa kept her words measured. âA lot of tension. Which is why Iâve decided to take a few months off.â
âYes, butââ
âI know how I feel. And Iâm fine.â
Loretta removed her arm when she heard Vanessaâs dismissive tone. âAll right, then. Youâre not a child anymore.â
âNo, Iâm not.â She folded her hands in her lap as Loretta rose. âIâd like an answer. What was my father punishing you for?â
Loretta seemed to brace herself, but her voice was calm and strong when she spoke. âFor betraying him with another man.â
For a moment, Vanessa could only stare. Here was her mother, her face pale but set, confessing to adultery. âYou had an affair?â Vanessa asked at length.
âYes.â Shame rushed through her. But she knew she could deal with it. Sheâd lived with shame for years. âThere was someone⦠It hardly matters now who it was. I was involved with him for almost a year before you went to Europe.â
âI see.â
Loretta gave a short, brittle laugh. âOh, Iâm sure you do. So I wonât bother to offer you any excuses or explanations. I broke my vows, and Iâve been paying for it for twelve years.â
Vanessa lifted her head, torn between wanting to understand and wanting to condemn. âDid you love him?â
âI needed him. Thereâs a world of difference.â
âYou didnât marry again.â
âNo.â Loretta felt no regret at that, just a vague ache, asfrom an old scar that had been bumped once too often. âMarriage wasnât something either of us wanted at the time.â
âThen it was just for sex.â Vanessa pressed her fingers against her eyes. âYou cheated on your husband just for sex.â
A flurry of emotions raced over Lorettaâs face before she calmed it again. âThatâs the least common denominator. Maybe, now that youâre a woman, youâll understand, even if you canât forgive.â
âI donât understand anything.â Vanessa stood. It was foolish to want to weep for something that was over and done. âI need to think. Iâm going for a drive.â
Alone, Loretta sat on the edge of the bed and let her own tears fall.
Â
She drove for hours, aimlessly. She spent most of the time negotiating curving back roads lined with budding wildflowers and arching trees. Some of the old farms had been sold and subdivided since
