let go of this, Iâll need to make a run for it. They have cameras.â
She picked up her pace, cursing beneath her breath. When she was finally finished, he followed her to the dark shadows beyond the plate-glass window. He watched as she quickly slipped into her sweater, his fingers twitching as he remembered the feel of her flesh in his hands.
âMorninâ.â Benny Barnes appeared in the doorway of his office, a wide smile on his face. âI was wonderinâ when youâd be up.â His attention was fixed firmly on Amelia. âI have breakfast for you. I bought some of that French roast coffee and some nice jelly-filled doughnuts. Can I get you some?â
Amelia glanced over at Sam and he shrugged. âI want a cold shower,â he muttered.
âShowerâs at the top of the stairs and to the left,â Benny said, his gaze still fixed on Amelia. âCome on in, Amelia. Iâll get you a cup of coffee.â
âActually, Iâd like to wash my face and get dressed.â
âIâll take a cup of coffee,â Sam said. He turned to Amelia. âYou go ahead. Iâll wait down here.â
He and Benny watched as she headed toward the stairs. âSheâs a beaut,â Benny said. âYou think she likes meat loaf? They got a great meat loaf special today at Addieâs Café. I never miss their meat loaf.â
Sam grabbed his jeans from the pile Amelia had dropped on the floor and tugged them over his boxers. âI think she has a fiancé,â he said. âSome guy back in Boston.â
âHmm.â Buddy frowned. âAnd youâre not worried about sleeping with her?â
âThat was all business,â Sam said. He grabbed his shirt and tugged it over his head. âI want you to help me break the bed down and put it in Ameliaâs trailer.â
âYouâre giving up?â Benny asked.
âNot exactly. But we canât stay here. Itâs too...public.â
âWe just have to fix that tarp,â Benny said. âThe nail on the right corner just popped right out andââ
âYou pulled it down, didnât you?â Sam said.
Benny shrugged. âMaybe. Canât blame me for wanting to bring a little attention to my business.â
Sam shook his head. âWell, everyone on that sidewalk got an eyeful this morning.â He walked back to the window and found his shoes tucked beneath the edge of the bed. There were still a few people on the sidewalk, including Minerva Threadwell and her camera.
âYou can go home now, Minerva,â Sam shouted. âThereâs nothing left to see.â
She gave him a thumbs-up.
Sam sat on the edge of the bed and put on his shoes, then began to yank the sheets and pillows off and tossed them on the floor. There was no way he was going to spend another minute exposed to the public view.
âWhere you planning to move it to?â Benny said.
âBack to the inn,â Sam said.
âYou canât do that,â Benny said.
âWe have joint custody of this damn thing,â Sam said. âAs long as Amelia agrees, then there wonât be a problem. And sheâll agree.â
By the time she came back downstairs, Sam and Benny had the bed pulled apart.
Amelia frowned. âWhat are you doing?â
âWeâre taking the bed to the inn,â Sam said. âWe canât leave it here.â
After a long moment she nodded. âYouâre right. But this doesnât mean Iâm giving up.â
Sam grinned. âI wouldnât expect you to.â
He wanted to yank her into his arms and kiss her, but he held his impulses in check. He had a plan for the bedâand the two of themâthat would satisfy them both. Sam just wasnât sure for how long.

âW HAT IS THIS PLACE ?â Amelia asked, setting her overnight bag down in the small stone structure next to the inn.
âIt was the kitchen before
