Chapter Seven

The stunning Tuscan countryside rolled serenely by as Leon steered the rental car along the tree-lined avenue. They’d traveled overnight by private jet, landing eleven hours later at Galileo Galilei Airport, near Pisa, some fifty miles from Florence. The flight had been uneventful, so Paige had managed to get some sleep in her luxuriously appointed cabin. She’d hoped Leon would join her, but he hadn’t. He’d been attending to a mass of paperwork when she’d retired for the night, but perhaps she shouldn’t have been surprised, because Leon was a professional businessman, and work always took priority over play.
The evergreen plumes of Tuscan cypress elegantly dotted the Italian landscape, creating their own unique picture-postcard world, while the intoxicating scent of lemons and rosemary wafted through the open windows of the car, delighting her nostrils, giving her a heady sense of well-being. The atmosphere between Leon and herself in this cultured new environment seemed to spark with barely contained sexual energy. He’d often glance across at her with that all-knowing look glinting mischievously in his expressive eyes.
She wondered what the sleeping arrangements would be when they finally arrived at his private villa. After their talk, when he’d graphically explained what turned him on sexually, while simultaneously fingering her to orgasm, she doubted very much that he would want to sleep alone.
So why hadn’t she told him about her past? Sooner or later he was bound to find out, and it looked like she would have to explain everything very soon. As the countryside sped by, bringing them ever closer to their destination, her stomach churned at the mere thought of what would happen when he saw for himself how disfigured she was. Leon loved beautiful things. In her mind she was less than perfect—a reject. Once he knew the truth, he couldn’t possibly still want her. Could he?
When Leon eventually guided the car along the gravel driveway to his private villa, Paige marveled at the beautiful vineyards covering the rolling hills. The wonderful smell was intoxicating, making her long for a comforting glass of Chianti or Pinot Grigio. Feeling more relaxed now, she glanced at her watch. They’d spent nearly five hours at the Caparelli factory. He’d insisted that she inspect the manufacturing process for the new range of gearboxes. Leon, a car enthusiast through and through, had been enthralled by the way the expensive new machinery had shaved mere microns of aluminum from the metal parts. She, on the other hand, had been bored to tears. Several times she’d had to stop herself from yawning as Leon, his hands gesticulating wildly in true Latin style, had endeavored to explain how the process worked.
God, what is it about men and their cars?
It was five in the afternoon, and they hadn’t eaten lunch, although her body clock was still running on Colorado time so maybe it didn’t matter.
Some thirty yards up ahead, the vineyards eventually petered out, allowing the slender form of the Tuscan cypress to take over. As the car followed the elegant line of trees that led to a large stone built villa, she noticed the red-tiled roof that slashed downward at a jaunty angle, providing cover for the wooden verandah below. A table and six chairs completed the idyllic picture, and she imagined herself sitting with Leon, enjoying a glass of wine as they took a light lunch, while looking out over the awe-inspiring countryside that spread out around them.
Leon carefully maneuvered the car through a narrow stone archway that led to an enchanting cobbled courtyard, before killing the engine and turning to her.
“Welcome to Casa Benedetto, I’ll show you around in moment.” He smiled and raised a brow. “Tell me, baby, did you enjoy the tour around the factory?”
“Very much so,” she lied. “It was extremely interesting.”
He nodded his head. “Good. I thought you’d like it.
