your aqua and purple backpack?â suggested Christopher. âNot many people would have one of them.â
âJason has.â
âThatâs true. His is underneath with the baggage. But he was carrying it in the ticket queue.â
âMaybe the man gave it to you because you had the purple bag? Maybe he should have given it to Jason?â
âThatâs a thought. I bet itâs got something to do with Radio 3-DISC,â Amy checked the business card in her overhead beam of light.
âJason said he was a disc jockey.â
âThatâs a clue.â agreed Christopher.â But there are many kinds of discs. What kind is it? If I say âdiscâ what do you think of?â
âDiscs in your back,â said Dr Chung whoâd just woken up..
Gloria left to talk with one of the crew up front.
âComputer discs,â said Winston. âCD discs. Discs to tie Puma shoe laces.â
âBut which one is it?â Christopher looked thoughtful as Winston vanished to go to the toilet. He detoured past his own seat and picked up something.
Meanwhile, Amy turned to Christopher. âThat film you gave Gloria to develop.â
âYes.â
âThat was from your old camera. Didnât you have the lens cap on when you âshotâ the mystery man?â
Each hour or so, one of the crew checked the toilets to make sure everything was clean. This time, the attendant found a suspicious package in the bin. He called Gloria to investigate. She found a red wrapped parcel in the bin behind the toilet door. Males and females used the same toilet. So anyone could have left it.
âDâyou think itâs a bomb?â The attendant kept well back.
âSend the passengers to the other toilets down the end, Iâll have a closer look.â
Gloria opened the door cautiously, trying not to knock the bin. It was such an awkward door. It went sideways and you had to slip around the edge.
âWhatâs happening?â Noticing the activity and the worried crew members gathering, Amy had hurried up too.
âGet back,â cautioned Gloria. â Itâs a round parcel in the bin. Might be dangerous.â
âA red parcel?â asked Amy. Gloria turned and looked over her shoulder . â How did you know? Is the red something to do with Chinese New Year?â
âI think I know what it is.â
âWhat?â Gloriaâs tone was sharp. If it were a bomb, the whole plane load of passengers were in danger.
And so was the bomber who was still on board. That meant it had to be a crazy prepared to be blown up with the plane.
âItâs a cake.â
âA cake of soap!â
âNo.â
Amy turned and beckoned to Winston.. âA Christmas cake with honey! Thatâs right isnât it Winston?
Not a bomb?ââ
Winston went white.â Iâm sorry. I didnât think thereâd be all this fuss.â
Gloria was really cross. Amy had never seen her so spiky.â You didnât think. Youâve seriously wasted our time and...â
Winston went on, â Iâm sorry. I dumped it. That cake has been to Singapore and halfway back. Mum would be so cross with me, about not giving it to my host family, especially when theyâve sent so many presents back. But I forgot at first, and then there didnât seem a right time. Then I found they never eat fruitcake.â
âHe was worried about the honey too. âAmy tried to stick up for Winston. He was a dag. But she knew how it felt to do dumb things and not speak out at the right time.
âSometimes, itâs hard toâ¦â
Winston nodded. âThen when you said about Quarantine and honey being illegal, I couldnât think how to get rid of it. I left it on the seat, but my minder picked it up for me. Then I threw it in the bin near the security scanner but I took it back in case someone thought it was a
