put out that within a few minutes she was able to see the Samaran prison corridor.
âThatâs amazing,â said Elfwyn. âYou did that?â
âYeah,â said Jinx.
âAnd you used the preceptorsâ knowledge as power for the spell?â
âYup.â
âSo, do I have a golden ball of knowledge too?â she asked.
âYeah. Everyone does.â
âCan you see my knowledge-ball?â
âOf course,â said Jinx.
She looked vaguely uncomfortable at the notion.
âItâs nice, itâs all sparkly,â Jinx assured her.
âAnd you could use it to do a KnIP spell?â
âIf you were standing close enough to me, yeah,â said Jinx.
âWell, donât!â
âI wonât without asking you first,â said Jinx.
Elfwyn pressed her hand against the ward. âThe space between the portal and the ward is a problem,â she said. âI wonder if someone from Samara stood in that space and showed the Bonemaster how to get through the portal.â
âOne of the preceptors,â said Jinx. âYeah, I guess they could have. If they noticed him sniffing around the portal site.â
âCan we push the ward further in?â said Elfwyn. âSo thereâs no space?â
âThe ward canât touch the portal,â said Jinx.
âWhy not?â
âBecause KnIP spells and wizardâs spells canât touch,â said Jinx.
âWell, we can put them closer together, anyway,â said Elfwyn.
And that was when Jinx discovered the Urwaldâs lifeforce wasnât there at all. Or not in a way he could draw onâany more than, say, Elfwyn could. All he had was the power of the fire inside him, which wasnât enough to shift a ward this strong. Neither was Elfwynâs power.
âWhy canât we move it?â she asked.
âBecause somethingâs happening to the Urwaldâs lifeforce,â said Jinx, fighting panic. âI canât reach it. Itâs like itâs being pulled away from me.â
âYou use the Urwaldâs lifeforce for power?â
Elfwyn listened as he explained what had happened.
âCripes,â she said. âDo you think it has something to do with the Bonemaster getting through to Samara?â
âI donât know.â Jinx thought of what Malthus had said. Once the Bonemaster understood that he and Jinx were both wicks, he would act against Jinx.
âYou do think that,â said Elfwyn. âYou just donât want me to feel bad about helping him get through.â
Jinx shrugged.
âBut what could he do to take over the Urwaldâs lifeforce?â said Elfwyn. âHe thinks itâs impossible to draw power from the Urwald. He told me so.â
âI donât know how heâs doing it,â said Jinx. âBut itâs making it easier for Reven to invade the Urwald, and harder for us to fight back. And Iâve got to stop him.â
âHow?â said Elfwyn.
âI donât know. I have to find out,â said Jinx. âI need to get Sophie to let Malthus look at the Eldritch Tome.â
Peas and Beans
S ummer blazed out into autumn, the leaves turning the many colors of fire. It quickly became the coldest autumn Jinx could remember. He yearned to go and find out what had become of Simon . But he couldnât. He had to get all the clearings armed and protected by wards.
The drain on the Urwaldâs lifeforce went on. It wasnât constant. Sometimes the lifeforce was there and Jinx could use it. Other times it was gone.
As soon as Jinx had a chance, he went and asked the trees about this.
The lifeforce goes deep, said the trees.
Well, it doesnât seem to be there at all sometimes, said Jinx. Whatâs happening to it? Whereâs it going?
We do not know.
How can you not know? Sometimes Jinx found it hard to be patient with the trees. The power comes from you.
The trees were
