and went in his life, Stephanie was the first one he could imagine waking up to every morning. He didn’t want to lose her, so he hoped his best friend would come to terms with his own feelings before they lost their chance.
One of the detectives came up the hallway. It was Grant, one of the newer guys.
    “You finished with her?”
He shrugged. “She’s a tough nut to crack. They’re cutting her loose in a minute.” Grant sat on the edge of the desk, loosening his tie.
Good. He hated not being near her, to think she was under any sort of anxiety. All he could remember were her sweet kisses and the sounds of her lovemaking. A connection had been solidified between them. The games had stopped for those precious minutes when they looked in each other’s eyes. So much emotion swam in her dark gaze that he swore he was drowning, sinking deeper the longer he looked at her. There was more to Stephanie than her ball-breaking personality—and he wanted to uncover it all. He wasn’t sure if she felt the same, but she’d made her way under his skin. When a person had waited as long for love as he had, it rooted quickly.
He wanted her—to claim her, own her, love her. No other woman had affected him the same way. They were either after the uniform or dollar signs, obnoxiously appeasing or too full of themselves. Stephanie was none of that. She was her own woman and didn’t put on a show for their benefit. It was refreshing.
“Look at this. It’s Steph.” Grayson passed him the paper. He flicked it out and looked at the front page of last weekend’s edition. It was Stephanie’s article from the gala with her picture. Fuck, she was beautiful.
“You make anything out of the picture?” Dominic asked Grant, holding up the front page.
“We’re guessing those are our guys in the car, but we have no way to know who they are. So far, this is the best pic we have, and it’s blurry at best.” Grant walked over to the coffee station and lifted the carafe. “Of course the witness knows shit. I can tell she’s lying.”
His hackles went up. “I don’t like your tone, Grant.” When he folded his arms over his chest, Grayson got out of his chair and took up residence between the two men.
“What?” asked Grant, taking a sip of his coffee.
Grayson gave Dominic a little shove, so he returned to pacing the hallway. “If she said she knows nothing, she knows nothing. Lay off her.” At least his partner had the same territorial defensiveness for Stephanie. As much as his friend tried to keep closed off from relationships, he was still a man beneath the tough exterior.
“Something personal?” Grant cocked an eyebrow.
    “Just…lay off.”
The sound of numerous footsteps approached. Dominic headed for the mouth of the hallway. Stephanie led the way, walking in hurried steps, a scowl on her face.
“Can you please take me home?” she asked.
“Yeah. Sure.” It was past three o’clock and quitting time. He nodded to Grayson and they all left out the side entrance. Many of their colleagues gave them suspicious glances. He couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like if Stephanie were their woman. How would society view it? Would his friends and coworkers accept such a union? He shook his head to clear the thoughts. There was no way Grayson would go for a serious relationship, never mind an unorthodox one like a ménage a trois. He frequently berated the men of Station 23 for their choice to settle down with the same woman. It just seemed like a natural course since they lived and worked together twenty-four/seven.
Once outside, Stephanie’s heels clicked on the concrete sidewalk. She was exasperated, tossing her arms as she turned to face them. “Why didn’t you do anything? Why didn’t you save me from those jerks?”
He’d felt impotent. Dominic had wanted nothing more than to break into the interrogation room and pull her out, but he had to follow protocol in the department. It was bad enough
